On top of that, we need a favorable draw. If we could get out of the bottom 2 and then drop another spot via the draft lottery, I'll be happy. To be honest, I'm not seeing anything too special in Fowler so even #3 would be ok with me.

Note: That's not to say that Fowler won't be a good defenseman, just saying that based on the limited amount of time I've seen him play, I haven't seen anything too special.

I couldn't help but smile a little if the Leafs somehow got themselves into the 5th worst spot and then won the lottery anyway.

It just seems like that sort of ultra-unlucky thing that would happen to the Leafs and I wouldn't know what to do other than laugh.

who cares the trade is done, even tho I think it was a terrible deal, the pick is gone so all I care about now is that our current players have some good games and show some development even if that ment we didn't win another game and finished last, we need to quit worring about stuff we dont have and concentrating more on the players/picks we do have

with the way this season has gone, it's almost inevitable.

Imagine we win 3 or 4 in a row, win both games against Atlanta and get into the playoff picture? Wouldn't that be something

Another important thing to consider is that most of the teams we are chasing, have many games against EACH OTHER:

Carolina plays Atlanta twice, Tampba Bay twice.

Florida plays Tampba Bay three times.

Columbus plays Islanders, Tampba Bay.

NY Islanders plays Anaheim, Rangers twice, Columbus.

Etc, etc.

But looking at their schedule, they having difficult teams to go against to end this season. Hopefully Toronto pulls through. We definately need to win against Florida, Atlanta twice, and Rangers twice.

If we go 12-0, we still only have 84 pts. Wont make the playoffs with that.

Atlanta would need to win all but two(besides the ones against us) of their remaining games to stay ahead of us if that were the case. Tampa and NYI couldn't lose more than five each either.

It's not like I think it's gonna happen. I just hadn't really looked at the standings all year, checked it out in this thread and was surprised they weren't as far out as I thought.

Edit: Nevermind I'm an idiot. For some reason I didn't realize the list was league-wide and not the confereance standings, Atlanta isn't 8th in the east

Turns out the Leafs DO suck as bad as I thought.

How can you call it a terrible deal if you don't even know what players we gave up? Would you call it a terrible deal if the Bruins ended up with the 5th or 6th pick and that player turned out to be a bust? Kessel is a lock for 30+ goals a season AT LEAST. If the Bruins end up with a worse pick it is likely that the deal is in our favor. This is why I DO care. This way you can call it a good or bad deal.

It appears both of us have lost our minds:

Lost in 6 games 4-2.

Damn I didn't realize we were so close to so many teams, I thought that loss to the Isles all but sealed out fate of 29th or 30th. I think we can catch the Canes and Panthers the way we're playing.

As long as we end up outside of the top 3 picks in the draft I will be happy. Oh, and if Boston misses the playoffs.

Out of the top 2 is fine with me. Cam Fowler is far from a lock to be a star player. I rally dont see what all the buzz is about.

I'm still waiting for Burke to say it's "A" first round draft pick, not "Our" first round pick.
...his original PC he stated our first in 2011, but never said the word 'our' in regards to the 2010 pick.

Here's the #2 and #3 picks overall from the last 10 years.

2nd overall
2009 - Hedman
2008 - Doughty
2007 - JVR
2006 - Jordan Staal
2005 - Ryan
2004 - Malkin
2003 - Eric Staal
2002 - Lehtonen
2001 - Spezza
2000 - Heatley
1999 - Sedin

3rd overall
2009 - Duchene
2008 - Bogosian
2007 - Turris
2006 - Toews
2005 - Johnson
2004 - Barker
2003 - Horton
2002 - Bouwmeester
2001 - Svitov
2000 - Gaborik
1999 - Sedin

Obviously there are some good players there, but at 3rd overal I'd probably only take Toews and Sedin (only with his twin) over Kessel. Maybe Duchene.

As for the 4th overall pick in the last 10 years, there is NOBODY I would take over Kessel, by a country mile. The only one I would consider would be Backstrom.

There is no guarantee with the draft. In 1999, The Islanders had 4 Firsts with 3 top 10 picks and picked Connoly, Pyatt, and Mezei, and Kudroc at 5, 8, 10, and 28th overall.

Boston should have targetted a roster player for Kessel. Trading for futures ONLY is risky. The Leafs will win this trade long term, I have faith.

this is exciting, its like we're in the playoff hunt!

little different from the last few years where at this time of year everyone was hoping for the leafs to lose.

I have a friend who thinks exactly the same thing. He even uses your justification.

We would be above .500 though (36-34)

I'd be happy with getting to 30 wins. Catching teams would be good
too.

I looked at that the other day. The Leafs need to keep winning and hope for someone to get cold. Maybe 2 teams to get cold, and a magic twist from the ping pong ball gods.

And I was right.

Updated again. We gained:

+1 on the Panthers
+2 on the Lightning
+2 on the Rangers
0 on the Canes though

And just for fun...

+2 on the Bruins
