Can we give Gillis the keys to the city yet? That's a fantastic cap hit. I was worried that he would argue that he could get around 7M on the open market and take a discount of a million or so.

I don't get why people are saying Kesler could've been signed for more less previously. He and his agent were asking for $5m/year from the start.

Furthermore, all this nine months ago talk is all well and good but we didn't even have Roberto Luongo extended at that point.

Agreed. Think we can still get Kaberle for him? Maybe we have to throw in Hodgson.

Except he's an RFA. $7M would give us 4 first round draft picks in return. Don't know too many teams that would be willing to do such a thing.

I assume you mean less, but I agree with you. Kesler was looking for $5 million last July and nothing he's done this season would make him back away from that number. It's still a fair deal and I'm glad he stuck to his guns and didn't try and up his asking price because of the season he's having.

Damn you Botchford, making us think the deal was better than it was. I'm still happy with this one, though. Kesler's at a near point-a-game clip this season while maintaining Selke-calibre defensive play, he could have gotten a pretty penny on an open market and would have been a solid candidate for an offer sheet, IMO.

I agree that this is a fair deal, but there's really no hometown discount (hometeam discount if you will) attached to it. Perhaps a very small one, but considering he was an RFA, he was probably looking at the $5-5.75M range anyways.

Considering he's putting up 75-80 pts this season as a defensive specialist the numbers look right.

6 years eh? Well I guess we have our "core" all signed.

Ya, Burrows should probably be paid $4 million plus at this rate.

You have to keep in mind that he signed well beyond his RFA years.

Obviously Burrows is underpaid, but he doesn't create what Kesler does on his own. Take Burrows off the Sedin line and his goal totals are cut in 1/2.

i am guess botch was right and its a signing bonus that pushes it to 5$ for 6 years

pretty stoked at this deal, I remember when people were saying we should take the 2nd round compensation pick instead of paying him 1.9 then. Ahh how things have changed. He makes every player that plays with him better AND he shuts down the other teams top line. Well done Gillis, GO CANUCKS GO!!

Especially considering the first 2 years. Gillis built it (the core) and now they (discounted UFAs) should come.

Well really, what is a hometown discount? The Sedins were apparently wanting $6.5 to $7 before signing for $6.1, so that's a $400k to $900k discount. Kesler's done something similar here, IMO.

Our 2012 & beyond contracts:
Sedins, Samuelsson, Burrows, Kesler, Edler, Luongo for 30.28M.

If we can resign Raymond for like 3M, that's our top 6 plus Luongo locked up for 30M a year! Hells yes.
