Do any North American pro leauges make money?

Given recent reports of MLS and the NBA of losing money it got me wondering, do any pro leagues make money? If I recall MLB doesn't make money as a whole but I'm not sure about the NFL.

If it is true that pro leagues in North America don't make money can we use that as a point of reference when evaluating our own league (the NHL)?

Alot of it is BS

Look at the value of these teams. Do you really think they are losing that much money? No they are not.

How accurate do you think that list is?

What information is it based on?

Let's put it this way, the Toronto Maple Leafs are worth a hell of a lot more than the Raptors are (if they were put onto the market).

Depends on who's buying them I suppose.

Even though that list is outdated, (Edmonton Oilers still owned by EIG), it's neat to see just how valuable the NFL teams are in comparison to the other leagues.

The NFL would make money just on the TV contract and merchandise sales. Not sure about the rest.

Those numbers are probably 10 years old. The Leafs are worth $470 million now, according to Forbes:

Oilers have doubled to $166 million and moved up to 24th among NHL teams:

Wasn't it reported that Major League Baseball's had profits of $6 billion in the last few years?

As I understand it, both the NFL and MLB make dough hand-over-fist.

And I would guess the biggest league in North America, the NCAA, does quite well for itself in basketball and football. Though fortunately they can boost their expenses to hide those obsene profits with other sports.

I can't remember where I read it but the saying goes:

You don't make money running a team; you make money selling a team.

(I think it was in a picture book about the Negro Baseball Leagues...)

Based on the old economic models, maybe not. But the new model using a team for real estate development is probably very lucrative.

So yes. They make a lot of it. If there wasn't money to be made, rich billionaires wouldn't invest their nest egg in these teams.
