The Out Of Town Thread part VIII (All non Habs related news here)

continued from: http://hfboards.com/showthread.php?t=732053

Just when you think nothing much will happen today a couple of trades pop up last second.

Chicago actually got a pretty good return for Barker, IMO.

Good deal for both teams.

I think it makes the Hawks better for this year, as Johnsson is an upgrade on Barker's current play IMO.

Long term, Barker is quite likely to remain better than Leddy... so more or less fair trade all around.

i like that move a lot for Chicago...

they get arguably an upgrade on D (not a huge difference, but Johnsson adds experience) in a season were they are serious cup contenders, they get a prospect that, while still years away from the NHL, was a consensus top 25 pick just a year ago... and of course, they get rid of a big chunk of cap expense for next season.

from Minnesota's pov, i can see why they made the move. Barker still has great upside, and he fits the model their new GM is looking for (exciting offensive brand of hockey). Still seems like a little much to give up unless they really saw some bad warning signs with Leddy ( who is also projected to be an offensive dman)

Gauthier should unload salary and pick up Cheechoo

Jonathan Cheechoo was placed on waivers by Ottawa yesterday.

I know he is currently injured (knee) and was not healthy this season, however, this guy is a former 56 goal scorer with over 90 points and plays right wing.

His cap it is currently $3,000,000.00 and is under contract for next season as well.

If we unload Mara/Spacek, we can afford him since our younger call-ups are playing well.

Cammalleri - Plekanec - Kostitsyn
Pouliot - Gomez - Gionta
Kostitsyn - Moore - Cheechoo
Lapierre - Metropolit - Moen

Markov - Subban
Hamrlik - Gorges
Gill - O'Byrne

Price
Halak

He cleared waivers for a reason,he had a good year with Joe Thornton and we don't have a player the quality of Thornton, pass another Ryder IMO

A big maybe if the Sens put him on re-rentry, but he's most likely never going to come back to a 90 points players. In fact, he may never hit 50 points again.

Yea it's a great trade from both perspectives. Minny does it because Johnsson is UFA this off season. They might not be able to resign him so they choose a younger, similar player with more upside who is locked up for more years. They can compete for playoffs for couple more years, which is something Leddy and Johnsson (if he leaves) won't help them do.

CHI gets better short term and if Leddy pans out, better long term as well.

How about we clear space to trade for Jose Theodore?

Hopefully, Racicot comes out of retirement and leads this team to a cup.

based on my rookie HF prognostication i cant see TB making the playoffs for the simple reason that their brutal away record - 10 games under 500 - precludes them from the playoffs...that keeps them as a 500 team till the end...
