Overview
Extra InformationThe Detroit Red Wings might be forced to play with 17 skaters -- one under the limit -- tonight against the Pittsburgh Penguins, depending on the status of defenseman Brad Stuart.

Stuart did not skate this morning. Coach Mike Babcock said he was hurt in Saturday's game in Vancouver but the club did not find out about the injury until today. Babcock would not reveal the injury, saying "he's getting checked out right now.''

Stuart is one of three Wings who have played all 71 games (along with Nicklas Lidstrom and Todd Bertuzzi). Forwards Patrick Eaves (sore back, neck) and Dan Cleary (sore groin) will not play tonight. Both said they hope to play Wednesday against St. Louis.

Eaves said he is getting better every day and "doesn't know if you can call it that (a concussion).'' He isn't experiencing headaches. "My upper back is pretty tight, muscle-wise; my neck muscles are tight,'' Eaves said.

Cleary said he was injured during the third period of Friday's game in Edmonton. He anticipated having some tests today. "It was real bad on Saturday, it's gotten a lot better, so I'm hoping it gets that much better,'' Cleary said.

Derek Meech and Brett Lebda will dress again. Meech likely will take some shifts at forward. Lebda dressed but didn't play Saturday. If Stuart plays, Babcock said Jonathan Ericsson will be the sixth defenseman.

The Red Wings can't recall anybody from Grand Rapids because they don't have enough salary-cap space. The only way they can bring up a player is to put someone on long-term injured reserve and it doesn't appear as if any of the injuries are serious enough to warrant that.

Jimmy Howard will make his 19th consecutive start in goal. On defense, they rotated everybody around at the skate. In addition to Stuart, Brian Rafalski did not skate, but he will play tonight.

Should be a quality game tonight. Pens are vastly overrated in my eyes and no one will ever change that.

We need to continue the strong play, pray Stuy plays, and beat that ass!

Malkin is out? I don't think so...he played their last game (and scored too).

With a fully fit team we could easily win against the Pens. They have become quite inconsistent. But with Eaves and Stuart (ok, ok, and Cleary) out, it makes things a little complex. I hope we pull it off, but I don't have a good feeling about this (it could also be due to the amount of cake I have eaten today).

Good luck Red Wings! Pwn Crybaby for me!

Man, look at those standings. The Wings would be 5 points out of 4th seed in the East. Blah.

Do they have to fall behind 2-0 tonight? Or can they just win it without having to come back?

Seems like lately their chances are better if they are behind 2-0 than if they get ahead 2-0...

A win would be huge - put some distance between the Wings and Flames.

Love the optimism, just what we need especially with every game being so important now, sad.

Hopefully we lay an ass whopping down on Cindy and the rest of those lowly cowards called the Pissburgh Penguins. 4-1 Detroit!

Yes, Malkin is out. Other than Crosby the most dangerous forward is... Pony?

Honestly, Staal always seems to play great against the Wings, keep him in check!

Go Wings!

Let's setup a first rounder with those tanking Sharks and screw them over. :p

I don't like the idea of separating Mule and Dats for now. They just seem to be too good at the moment. How about for a couple of shifts they roll Z-D-Mule. That'll just be too good.

That's good news hopefully. But the Wings should not take it lightly. They still have to put in a good 60 minutes. Go Wings!

I would like to think that my posts here have that kind of tangible, real-world effect on what goes on on the ice. In reality, sadly, they do not.

Yeah I'm in a mood, what can I say?

I think people are getting a little high on the hog after the Wings were less than half a second away from getting one point instead of three this weekend. Combine that with the new crop of injuries and I'd say this team still has plenty of hurdles to get over before we can start feeling cocky about beating 1st place teams like it's no big deal.

Let grumpy people be grumpy. We all have those moments.

Anyway, no idea what the heck to expect with this game. Never sure which Wings team will show up, and we're down a couple bodies again.
