If we're gonna trade for a 4 million dollar player, I'd rather it be Ryan Smyth than Ales Hemsky. Just imagine having Homer on the top PP unit and Smyth on the secondary PP unit. You'd have goalies waving the white flag.

That's a wonderful idea - except Ryan Smyth has a 6.25m cap hit.

I was just about to to post this. Another factor is age. We could sign Hemsky for the long-term and have him for another 6-10 years if we wanted. Smyth is 34 and I don't think he will pull of a 'Chelios' and play any longer. Smyth is a great player, don't get me wrong. But I can really see Hemsky helping either Datsyuk or Zetterberg out to get those big points because this year has just affected everyone stats wise.

If we trade Cleary+prospect(s)+pick(s) then we might be able to get him, since Edmonton will want to rebuild with some young blood. But of course, as with Kovalchuk (not to that extent, because Kovalchuk was really just out of the question) and other players, this speculation is just fantasy. It won't happen because if Detroit wanted him, they would have tried to get him. It would have been quite convenient since the Wings are in need of another top 6 forward for next year.

I like the reclamation idea of Svatos. IIRC he can fly and had some touch. 50pts is his career high, but I suppose he's been terrible this year. I'm not sure who in FA could really come in and have a big effect outside of some of the big name guys. Kovy and Plec... etc. Which would be an awesome pipe dream, but lets face the fact. Unless Lidas comes back for the league minimum we can't add anybody in the range of Kovy... or even Plecs...

This is an idea I can get behind.

If he finds his old form, Svatos could be a 30 goal guy. That's the kind of project they would do well to take on.

Me too. But Hemsky will cost you some picks/roster players and some prospects, plus 4.1m.

Svatos we could get for.. nothing. and under 1m.

What about Frolov? Williams leaves and Lidstrom takes a small cut... that would save somewhere between 2.5 and 4... ?

I've said that all season on RWC that Detroit should get Frolov in the off season. He's a good sniper (although he hasnt had a great season) and he's very good defensively as well. I think he would do very on Datsyuk's wing in Detroit's puck possesion system.

Bert will have to go along with J-Will if they're gonna have a shot at Frolov.

That's the plan. J-will is gone, fact. Bert will have to play like crazy to win a contract and age, stats and form is not on his side. Frolov/Hemsky and a UFA third liner (like Miller, Eaves) should replace them. Abdelkader might actually be that second player.

Even then, I don't think the Wings will have enough room for Frolov.
