But, alas, there is no place for Anton here. He scores too many goals. We need more shutdown defensemen to shut down our offense by chasing forwards around the defensive zone for minute-long shifts after screwing up a routine breakout, passing into teammates' skates, rimming the puck around the boards, taking one shot on goal every four games that a mighty mite goalie could stop while blindfolded, sending the puck along the boards in the offensive zone to re-start the cycle since they are so horrifically unskilled to actually make a play with the puck, taking horrible penalties, and icing the puck while attempting a ten-foot pass to an open forward.
Also, did you know that Newton's Third Law is incorrect: Although it states for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction, it fails to take into account that no force is equal to Anton's slapshot
If Anton Babchuk and a team of his clones faced off against a team of Anton Babchuk clones, the game would go to overtime tied 9000-9000 with both teams converting on 150% of their powerplay chances. Then Babchuk would score on a one-timer off the center ice face-off to win the game.
If McBain can fix his defensive leaks (and I imagine he will with time)
Definitely. His offensive game at the NHL comes easy and natural, the day he rounds out his defensive game is the day he could be a real gem in this league. I think he will, he's got all the tools and I think all the smarts are there. When he learns the game at the NHL level I think his defensive game will come around. The smarts and tools are there, I don't question that for a second.
I agree. He just looks like a rookie out there at times--scared and hesitant. He doesn't trust himself to take a risk defensively and gets caught in no-man's land.
Anyone else think we're going to need a new defensive coach next season? Our breakout is terrible, forwards are leaving the zone before we've got complete control of the puck, when they're in the zone, they've got no idea where they're suppose to be.

Just a huge mess.
Pretty sure that's not on the defense then. But yes, we really could. Ronnie Franchise needs to move back to the front office.

I wouldn't mind Glen Wesley to be honest. I'm sure he'd do great things with our young guys in McBain and Carson, not to mention he'd still be a great guy to have around the likes of Pitkanen and Gleason.
No coach would be able to convince Ray Whitney how to play at least semi-competent defensive hockey, or to make Eric Staal stop floating. It is disgusting watching those two on the same line together. Whitney has absolutely no clue what he is doing in the defensive zone and Staal doesn't even try half the time.

Those are defensive mistakes. The breakout pass in particular is what bothers me. The team is so hot and cold with that it's ridiculous. And the cold streaks tend to last a lot longer.

This is one of the best ideas I've ever read on this site. I'm serious! Why can't this happen? What are the obstacles? I say do it!!
Yeah, Ronnie has always struck me as more of the cerebral type player. Not necessarily the motivator, mind you his leadership was unquestionable. But I would MUCH rather have him bringing in the guys that he thinks would make a good team then coaching said team. There's just something about him that doesn't strike me as the coach type and I really can't put my finger on it.
