So What happened to our Youth Movement?

Last year, LL talked about getting younger and this year ALOT of guys gots looks in the NHL but I think much of that was attributed to the rash of injuries. Bergfors got that look and increased his value.

So, what happened? We have Zharkov and Fraser on the team but riding the pine while playing the vets added this year in Neidermeyer, Skoula, and McAmmond. At least Kovalchuk is younger than Shannahan and Pelley is younger than Madden.

What young guys will get added next year? Corrente? Eckford? Palmieri? Any of the trio of Swedes?

We traded Bergfors, who was the only rookie forward with a chance of seeing playoff time. And the trade for Skoula benched Fraser.

Going into the playoffs, we're definitely going to go with veterans over rookies. Every team does.

And it's never going to be, unless we're doing a rebuild.

Considering the position the team is in, I don't think it's a big deal that we didn't have the youth movement. But we do have guys like Fraser and Zharkov who have valuable experience from being here for most of the season. They'll almost certainly stick next season.

And other guys like Halischuk, Corrente, Eckford, Palmieri, and Davis will all be better because of their brief experience next time they are called up.

Originally I think Lou thought this would be a down year.

Once we started rattling off wins, we signed Dean Mac and our vets took over. If we weren't in playoff contention I'd bet we'd see Zharkov, Halischuk, Eckford, etc in the lineup.

Not all of our youth was ready for full time stints in the NHL. We've seen Fraser, Bergfors, Zharkov, Haliscuk, Pelley, PL3 all get good shots plus cameos from Palmieri, Davis, Corrente, Eckford, Sestito, etc. We all hoped that Pelley would be able to nail down a centers role which didn't happen and Halischul and Zharkov just didn't have the scoring touch yet.
Also don't forget that Clarkson, Zajac and Parise are all pretty young as well.

That being said hopefully over the next few (2) years we have some expiring contracts (Niedermayer, McAmmond, Pandolfo, Rolston, White, Salvador). Hopefully by then these young guys will be ready full time.

You want youth, watch next year if they re-sign Kovy. Your probably can expect Corrente, Ekford and Fraser on defense, while Palimeri, Zarkov and probaby Halischuck, who I still believe needs to bulk up. Add Pelley as our full time
4th line center.

I think the Devils have to build prospects gradually. They need to be like the Yankees. They added prospects little by little, and eventually turned into one of the top 5 farm systems in baseball. The Devils have a solid farm system, and despite the HF rankings, is plenty deep enough to fill our needs for now. We still need a goalie. But hopefully in the draft, Lou takes the best player available, rather than just trying to fill our needs.

IF there's one thing I trust Lou and Conte to do, it's find and take the player they think will work out the best for the team. Despite a drought around the turn of the millennium, they look like they've got got their drafting mojo back and that means nothing but great things for the organization.

I love when fans get it.

Others can have their ****ing youth movement, counting kiddies on the roster, as if that means anything.

I like contenders.
