610WIP: Backlund to Start Saturday

MOD EDIT: http://www.csnphilly.com/03/26/10/Ba...045&feedID=695

Quote:
Desperate times in hockey sometimes call for desperate measures.

Against that backdrop, the reeling Flyers are looking for Johan Backlund to give them a much-need boost when he makes his NHL debut in goal Saturday in Pittsburgh, CSNPhilly.com has learned.

The 28-year-old Swede, who has played very well in 41 games with the Phantoms with a 21-17-2 record, will try to end the Flyers’ four-game losing streak.

“For me, it would be a great chance to play my first game and try to help the team,” Backlund said at Friday’s practice, even though he still had not been told of the start.

Accord to 610wip, backup goaltender Johan Backlund to start vs the Pens on Saturday.

Backlund starting has not yet been confirmed by the team or any other outside sources.

Sweet. What better way to introduce a rookie to his first NHL game than to get lit up by the Pens...

Maybe that's why Laviolette is doing it, to make the team play in front of him better, like they did for Leighton.

What day is he starting? Sunday is the Devils. Saturday is the Pens. Title says Sunday, OP says Pens on Saturday.

Wow, on one hand I want to hold out hope that Boosh will pull it together, and I can't imagine this will help that process.

On the other hand, this is exciting(albeit a bit scary) and I like the boldness of this decision.

You're right, its Saturday. I'm in the middle of making plans for Sunday. I guess I can't do two things at once.

This is how Tim P. has it:

http://www.csnphilly.com/03/26/10/Fl...862&feedID=704

Quote:
What remains to be seen is whether Laviolette has the will to do something drastic and put untested goalie Johan Backlund in net.

Brian Boucher simply can’t give his team a lift, regardless of how bad things are in front of him. It’s largely not his fault. But he can’t seem to help them, either.

“Teams go through stretches where wins are hard to come by,” Boucher said. “Sometimes you got to scrape them out. We’re not going to go through an 82-game season without facing adversity, and I think this is the second stretch where we’ve had to face some adversity. Hopefully, we buckle down as a group and get stronger from this so when we get in these situations again we can get the job done.”

Quote:
“We need to pick up the lack of scoring, we need to make the big saves, we need to buckle down on our penalty kill and score some goals on our power play,” said Scott Hartnell.

“You can blab your mouth all you want but if you’re not focused, getting on the body, moving your feet and making the plays, you’re not going to get wins and sooner or later it’s going to catch up to us.”

That wouldn't be the team I would give a rookie goalie for his NHL debut, but I guess it couldn't be much worse than Boucher at this point.

My over/under for goals allowed is 4 and I'll take the over.

Except that Varly was a 1st round pick and played very well at the AHL level before being called up by Washington. It didn't hurt that the Caps were a much better team than the Flyers are right now either.

A fan said last night, who was at the game when Boosh let those goals in the air was sucked out of the building. But this is what happens when your on your 3rd goalie.

There's not much worst that we can do.

I guess we know what may have been said between Laviolette and Holmgren after last nights game during the animated discussion.
I dont have a problem with this at all. Yes its Pittsburgh, but this may be a wakeup call to everyone to pull their heads out of the *****.

Might as well take a shot. Who really thought we were going to beat the Pens with Boucher in net anyway?

Yea I mean, it seems like we're going nowhere with Boucher so we might as well try something different.

I don't think I was too impressed with him in the preseason.

Any chance we can see Backlund on Sunday? I'd like to see him play in person, but if they're splitting the weekend, that would mean Boucher giving up 3 or 4 goals early.

Oh, and anyone worried for the poor fan who wins Boucher's jersey Sunday. That person doesn't deserve the boos/grief they will get when Boucher's name is called.

Very upset. I was going to bet the pens and over large. Still will but would have rather had boucher as that was as close to a win as you can get. I understand what he is doing by this move, as they must feel they have nothing to lose. Just think boosh will be back next year as well lol. His good buddy shooter must receive money on the back end of some of these contracts he hands out. That is the only rational explanation.
