Playoff Do or Die Lineup?

I really don't buy into that superstition **** and if you don't believe by now that we are getting in, than just don't comment as all the face palm and angry emoticons in the world isn't going to change things.

My question is, if the Sabres encounter a situation where they need to put their best 5 or 6 out there and are down by 1 in the final 2 minutes of a game these playoffs, who do we put out there?

It was never really an issue when we had the stacked teams from 05-07, we couldn't go wrong with 10 different guys. This year, Ruff is going to have to identify his 5 or 6 strongest players, not necessarily the most talented or the best, but the guys who would make something happen in the clutch. Who do you think he will call upon.

I'll say list the lineup he'd send out if we need a goal with Miller pulled as well as the lineup he'd send out if we need to ice a win....curious to see what you guys think...

If we need a goal:
Vanek-Goose-Connolly-Roy
Myers-Pommer
----This seems to me the best offensive presence we can bring and actually a very dangerous lineup. We bash this team for not being able to score, but whenever these situations have arisen in the last few years, these guys have usually been out there and they've always at least applied solid pressure.

If we need to ice a 1 goal lead:

Grier-Goose-Hecht
Myers-Tallinder

I was torn between Goose and Connolly. Gaustad will win the draw and be a trooper blocking shots, but Connolly in my mind would be more capable of shutting down a shifty center....I went with Gaustad.

I don't think there's any doubt Gaustad would be the centerman in to protect the lead, if only for the signifcant advantage in faceoffs he represents over either Connolly or Roy.

Ruff has also played Roy at least as much as Connolly in such situations this season - despite Connolly currently being linemates with two of the better defensive forwards on the team.

I agree with the OP's lineup. They're the go-tos. Can we open it up, generally?

Vanek Roy TK
Hecht TC Poms
Torres Gaustad Grier
Kaleta Ellis Stafford

xMair, Mancari

Tallinder Myers
Lydman Sekera
Rivet Butler

Monty

Although I get the feeling in the playoffs we'll see Rej and Ellis benched in favor of Mair and Montador.

If we were down by a goal, I'd put out Hecht-Roy-Kaleta towards the end. They all seem like our most clutch scorers.

Down a goal:

Goose-Hecht-Poms
Myers-Tallinder

Poms is the better defensive forward and a natural RW. Hecht is no worse than Connolly in taking draws if Goose gets thrown out. If Goose is resting, then sub in Connolly or Roy depending on who's been better at the dot that evening.

At this point, Montador is a better option than either Butler or Sekera. Of the two, I prefer Butler.

Ta,
If you mean up a goal, I agree competely. That would be the 5 I would put out.

You mean you wouldn't put our 30-goal pace scorer Hecht out there if you were down a goal??

the reason I'm cracking up is because if I wanted to touch the offensive lines, it would have been to replace Gaustad with Hecht. But that would lose faceoff ability. Which isn't as important 6 on 5 (much greater ability to win a loose puck if it's tied up near the dot).

He's one of three players on this team who can create for others. Connolly and Kennedy are the other two. We get it, you hate Roy. At least you're consistent about that.

What's wrong with this roster is the lack of playmakers in the forward corps outside the likes of Roy and Connolly. Look at Roy and Vanek's point totals when they are put with Mancari and Kennedy, respectively. Amazing what they can do when they're not dragging Drew Stafford's corpse around the ice or forced to play with a bottom-6 plugger who, while giving good effort, is overmatched talentwise.

We've had one player who's been in the top-20 in GW goals for both of the last two years: Derek Roy. Only Connolly (24) has more 3rd period/OT points than Roy (23). He should be on the ice in late-game situations when the team needs a goal.

For me:

Hecht-Roy-Grier-Vanek
Connolly-Myers

Pominville and Vanek are interchangeable IMO.
