A friend of mine was using his iPhone on T-Mobile for a while (until he switched to Blackberry). No 3G though.

We've always been able to buy one through any of the major cell companies in Canada...

http://www.apple.com/ca/iphone/buy/

When I was in the the U.S. in February I thought I'd buy one from the Apple store there thinking they'd be cheaper only to find out you could only get them through the contract with AT&T.

Apple is moving away from AT&T slowly.

iPad comes unlocked

Hopefully the iPhone follows suit.

None of the Canadian GSM/HSPA operators have committed to release micro-Sim cards. So really it's irrelevant to us up in Canada and I don't see people getting this for T-Mobile unless they like having a larger iPod Touch on EDGE.

I won't get into the iPad debate here (larger iPod touch... lol), but there is no way it will run on anything pre-3G. Hopefully when I own a second gen one (lol), Rogers will have learned not to rip off Apple's customers so much.

As much as people hate AT&T in the US, they have really good deals on iPhone plans compared to Canadian users.

And I think Apple adopted micro-sims so people don't start using their iPhone sims. It's a way to make you stay with AT&T even if you're not saying it, although I suspect they will be adopted in the near future by major US and Canadian carriers (I assume Rogers is planning something already).

Honestly, for as much as I dislike AT&T's network, and their (IMO) shady ads with Owen Wilson, where is Apple really going to go? (BTW, if you want 3g with the iPad, it's only on AT&T in the US.)

T-Mob? GSM, but a different 3G frequency, and weak coverage area of it.
Sprint? CDMA and smaller than Verizon.
Verizon? Was originally offered the iPhone, and sort of screwed the pooch. I'm on their network, and like them, but I really don't like CDMA phones, and even say I bought a Droid/Nexus One, contract-free, I would still have to get the data plan to use it on their network, and you pay a bit more per month, w/o a contract than not.

If Apple wants to shoot themselves in the foot by staying carrier exclusive that's fine not to mention stepping away from industry standards.

Seeing the new phones with hotspot capability (Palm Pre Plus on Verizon and the HTC EVO 4G on Sprint) I don't see why someone would pay $100+ extra for a 3G version and force themselves to switch carrier JUST for an iPad.
