Mike Richards & Team Chemistry

The Flyers were rolling tonight against NJ, Gagne-Briere-Leino had great chemistry and most other players played with determination.

Maybe it's me, but Richards looked like he was "sulking" and his unmotivated game play continued. Looks like Lavs found out which player was the problem between Gagne & Briere, and at the end of the game Lappy played on the PP and Richards watched from the bench...

Post game comments his body language was telling and even though we won he stated about the lack of discipline being an issue which 'was disappointing'.

I've picked up very negative body language from Richards all season.

The way he throws hits and blocks shots show that he's clearly not invested in the team and won't fight through pain to win.

Richards really doesn't seem to be as effective this year.

No, we've got til December...that's why we've got to win a Cup within the next 3 seasons. We don't want the last engravings on the Cup to be anything but PHILADELPHIA FLYERS.

There are two areas in his stats that are widely different from last year.

Assists - 50 last year, 30 this year
SH Goals - 7 last year, 1 this year

He has 2 fewer goals, with 6 games left to play. His faceoff % has improved, his average time on ice is a bit shorter, and his shooting percentage is a bit higher.

I wonder how many of those assists last year were from Knuble tipping a goal in from the crease. And how many goals did Gagne whiff on after a perfect setup for the first 3/4 of this season?

You can't expect Richie to play with an unhealthy Gagne and Carcillo for most of the year and put up the same numbers he did with a healthy Gagne and Knuble, that's pretty unreasonable IMO.

Richards’ rally

Mike Richards had a message for the Flyers after Saturday’s loss to the Penguins. And, according to coach Peter Laviolette, it was one that the team heard.

“It was a good message,” Laviolette said. “We have to focus on the game tonight, and I thought it was the perfect thing. Not to worry about four points or four wins, or 10 points, just this game. That was the message delivered by Mike.”

The captain himself, however, downplayed the importance of the talk.

“It was just the leaders getting together, and stepping up and saying that I think everyone was focusing on the big picture,” Richards said. “Prongs [Chris Pronger] and Kimmo [Timonen] and [Simon] Gagne, we all kind of thought that and just wanted to settle everything down.”

Through winning streaks and losing streaks, debate about Richards’ captaining style has continued, both in news stories and fan circles. Laviolette’s strong defense and support for his captain was obvious.

“Well, there’s lot that goes on in the rooms that you guys don’t know about,” he said to the reporters gathered for Saturday’s postgame press conference. “That was just an example.”

No matter – if Richards’ message to the team lit the fire that resulted in the win over the Devils, clearly, it got the job done.

Don't forget guys, Richards did have surgery on both shoulders after last season. That may have some impact on his style of play this year, in combination with his linemates, etc.

Regards,
Rick

Well put.

I'm having a hard time understanding everyone knocking on Richards. He may not be the best leader (and that's an extremely subjective opinion to begin with), but he's been busting his ass and has been a very good player post Olympic-break. On the list of Flyers worries, Richards should be waaaay down the list.

He did look frustrated yesterday, but maybe he is playing hurt or something.

I'm glad Giroux is back on his line.

Not a wonder he has so few assists this season, he's been with Gagne almost all year and Gagne haven't showed up to play until after Olympics break.

Guess he's kinda selfish player a bit also, sure he cheers when the team scores but he'd like to be part of those plays leading to goals.

Which leads to some scenarios like in last night's game:
Team is up by few goals and Richie has zero points, he tries to dangle thru 3-4 Devils at the blueline, loses the puck and heads slowly to the bench.

Imagine if that post-hitting wrister would've gone in?
This discussion wouldn't even be held.

It's Mike mother ****ing Richards, it's his style, that's how he plays. It's been a damn bumpy road all season, yet he's still leading this disaster to the playoffs.

Let's give him a break, shall we?

As a long time reader of this board I just have to say it amazes me how fast some of you are quick to throw a guy under the bus. I will gladly take a captain who works his ass off every game and does not YAP and call out guys to the media.

Seems funny to me about how every member of that team says Richards is a very strong leader and a great captain. Yet the media who obviously have a vendetta against the guy want to stir up a bunch of ****.

Also I like Pronger but if we're going to talk about a "locker room divide" it wouldn't surprise me if it was coming from him. Excellent hockey player and person but he has had multiple problems on several different teams with this exact same thing.
