Pavel Datsyuk is the Red Wings best forward and player (arguably). After last years dissappointing playoffs, I think Pav talked with Babs about changing up his game to a style that better fits the playoffs. Datsyuk's old playmaking ways were effective in the regular season, but not the playoffs. We need Datsyuk to take over games for us in the playoffs if we plan on going anywhere this year. Datsyuk has been shooting the puck much more all season. The first half of the season Datsyuk was underachieving as he was still perfecting his shooting, but as the season went on he has been getting the hang of it. Now he is currently leading the Red Wings in goals . Now that he has his confidence back, his deking and playmaking abilitys have come back as well making Datsyuk as dangerous as ever.
In the last 28 games he has 16 goals 16 assists 32 points. He has a 1:1 goals to assist ratio. He also has a 22% shooting % (16 goals / 72 shots).
Alot of the goals he has been scoring have been low percentage wristers too.
Do you agree with my assessment? Has Datsyuk's game changed? Is his new style going to allow Datsyuk to take over in the playoffs? Will Datsyuk become a 35+ or 40+ goal scorer in the future? Also will he improve on his season high of 97 points?
it is good that datsyuk is shooting more, but better than shooting more is that he has been moving more often into the high % scoring area between the circles. PP goal in the most recent game vs calgary and the recent goals vs CBJ and nashville goals are good examples. sometimes he passes it anyway, as in the colorado game after the olympics.
i think it is unlikely he will sustain his present goal pace over a long period. datsyuk still looks to pass before shooting.
his wrist shot has always been strong, but it seems more accurate than usual. but that may be a random anomaly.
Datsyuk has really improved after the Olympics. Wow, imagine if he played like this the whole year. 97 points? Ha! He would have finally passed the 100 points mark. Oh well, I'm really happy with the way Datsyuk is playing and he seems to be more confident with his shooting. Lately he's scored some absolute beauties. Just makes me love him even more (in a totally non-homosexual way of course)
There are 2 goals Datsyuk scored I liked.
The one, I believe it was vs the Oilers, when he just threw it hard and it hit a player and went in. I do not know if he actually saw Z on the other side and tried to pass it to him, or he just threw it and hoped it would hit something and go in. I hope the latter was the case.
And the other, I think it was vs the Preds, the slap shot and it went in. He does not use it often, I do not remember seeing him using a slap shot, but it was good to see.
I do not know if he changed his game, but he has to shoot more.
Datsyuk is just ridiculous. Recently he looked like he's on a mission and won't be denied.
I am not sure of 97 pts though. Sure at current rate, he would score 100 pts, but a season is long and he would still have to produce when things aren't going well.
I think it's as much a team effort for Pav to break his record. It's much easier to produce when everyone is pushing the other team into their zone. Also someone has to feed him or score from his pass... which means that line is going to be unstoppable... while providing inspiration for rest of the team.
So in a sense, if Pav breaks his record next season, you can bet that Stanley Cup could be in order for this team as well.
