Kings Sign Kozun - Entry Level Contract

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/spor...ulous+Forum%29

"Small at 5-foot-9 and 180 pounds but speedy and a natural scorer, Kozun led the Western Hockey League this season with 107 points on a league-best 75 assists. The Kings chose him in the sixth round and 179th overall in the 2009 entry draft.

Kozun is the captain of his junior team, the Calgary Hitmen. They're about to start the second round of the WHL playoffs and will face Medicine Hat."

He's the assistant captain of the Hitmen though

Are we thinking that Kozun has a better chance to make it to the nhl than Azevedo and the other little guy over at St Clouds?

He is not nasty, but he is fearless and very slick.

Thanks for correcting that, yes he is an alternate and not a captain of his junior team. That 180 lb description might be a little pushing it too though he stands the potential of getting to that weight and not losing any of his speed.

He'll be a point-a-game player in the AHL sooner than later and that combined with the fact that he's the ultimate setup man and has good vision of the ice stands him a good chance to make the Kings in a couple of years.

For the record, the broadcasters for the first game in round 2 of Kozun's WHL playoff series commented that Kozun reminds them of Cliff Ronning. (similar size, similar offensive capability, similar speed)

I'm assuming that he makes it to the NHL he can only play a top 6 role, do you Kings fan see this in him?

You have a solid core and one of the best prospect pools out there.

What are the consensus feelings of Kozun ever being a full time NHL'er

He'll get a taste sooner rather than later, as we saw with the quick promotion of Andrei Loktionov during his rookie pro season, it's impossible to predict if he'll stick or not. My guess would be it's goinig to take at least a PPG season in Manchester before he gets a serious look in LA.

Lombardi rarely gushes over specific prospects but he's been tripping over himself to praise Kozun from the start of this season.

Fearless is right.

Dangerous + fearless adds up to NHLer.

Justin Azevedo had tremendous numbers in juniors too but so far haven't been able to translate that into consistent numbers in the AHL. Looks like Kozun is a much, much faster player though so that will probably benefit him.

Azevedo only had one good season in junior while Kozun has kept this up for 2 seasons.

GP G A PTS
Azevedo 06-07 50 17 39 56
Azevedo 07-08 67 43 81 124

GP G A PTS
Kozun 08-09 72 40 68 108
Kozun 09-10 65 32 75 107

They're similar in size (Azevedo 5'7", Kozun 5'9") and even wore the same number in junior (#15) - they were even both 6th round picks though Kozun was chosen when he was 19 while Azevedo was picked when he was 20. Kozun also made Team Canada for the World Junior Championships while Azevedo wasn't even invited to the selection camp.

The biggest difference that I've seen between these two players is:
1) Kozun has better separation speed
2) Kozun hasn't missed a game due to injury

The last one in my opinion could make all the difference as Kozun will be moving up to the next level with none of the wear-and-tear that Azevedo did. That being said, there's a good chance that they'll be teammates next season so fans in Manchester will be able to compare and contract better than we can here.

Speed by itself is not enough but when you have speed and a scoring touch, size becomes far less relevant. He is a fascinating prospect. I am excited about his development. A diamond in the rough who could turn into a young MSL would be very special on a team that is missing finishers. I am actually reminded of Corey Millen and how important he was to the Kings in the scoring depth he gave.

We're all talking MSL but a more recent comparison can be Patty Kane. He came into the league at a 160 lbs wet. Not only is he fearless but you can't hit what you can't catch. He's also one of the best playmakers in the league. Hopefully he can become a poor man's Kane.

I love this kid. To me, he blew the doors off of Schenn in the World Juniors.

In saying that, he doesn't even stand a remote chance of becoming an impact player in on a Terry Murray team.

I can't wait to see the Kozun-Lokti-Moller line. It'll be like playing Nintendo, where the skinny guys skate around everyone, but if the fat guys ever touch one, the skinny guy spins on the ice for, like, 5 mins...

I've heard of comparisons between Kozun and Martin St. Louis, but the only time I've actually seen Kozun play was at the WJC's. The difference between Azevedo and Kozun is that Kozun is much quicker. Top speed may be the same, but Kozun can get to his top speed a lot better.

Garrett Roe actually plays physical as well. Not sure how it'll translate as he progresses, but he's got a bit of Theo Fleury's Little Man Syndrome.

Quote:
A player who can get under the skin of his opponents, Roe racked up 151 PIM during the season as well. "Garrett Roe epitomizes what every hockey team seeks in a complete player," stated Indiana Ice President/G.M. Paul Skjodt. "Not only is he a fine student athlete, but his passion, heart, and style of play is something that no one can teach. We know he will be a Husky fan favorite from day one".
Quote:
"Scoring points and scoring goals is obviously a top priority of mine, and that's my goal every time to try to put points on board for the team, but at the same time I'm not going to shy away from any contact. I'm not going to shy away from taking a guy that's 6'4" and rubbing his face in the glass."

"That's just my style of game. I've always had a gritty hard nosed type of game. At the same time I think it'd be boring if you didn't get in people's faces, and you know, start a little scrum every other game or every other whistle, so to speak. That's just how I am and I've always been that way and I'll never change. It really brings excitement for me to the game."
Garrett Roe audio interview on The Pipeline Show

hes not even close to 180...id say closer to 160, which makes a big difference when your only 5'8 or 5'9....he needs to bulk up
