Did they really just make a ranking of defense based on how many goals the defense puts up and called it the best D in the league list?

k read it a bit looks like they used all stats except goals allowed.

You can't measure how good a defense is based on the numbers they used to determine how good a defense the team has. ABSURD.

However, I do believe we are in the 15-20 range so I guess it works out.

sounds about right. Replace Redden with a real #1, and give Del Zotto one more year to improve and we're at #9 or #10

Washington definitely does not have the best defense. I'd say they're about a hair better than ours.

they're boosted statistically by how much washington scores, their goals/for against ratio as a result and Mike Green's assist total.

This like any other analysis has its major flaws.

I don't think they have the best, but a hair better than ours? Not a chance. Mike Green alone puts them 5 slots ahead of us at least.

Green isnt as good as hes made out to be. I dont want to speak too loudly and disturb the large number of angry cup-deprived caps fans around here but on a bottom half team Mike Green is a slightly better Sheldon Souray.

I wouldn't say sightly but he really is no game changer. Mike Green playing for Washington inflates his stats as much as any home run hitter at bat in Yankee stadium

So what you're saying is their rating system is absolutely worthless?

A rating system for DEFENSEMEN that doesn't count goals allowed? Shouldn't that be like one of the #1 things you judge the defense on?

Like the Norris trophy. Shouldnt that be awarded to the best DEFENSIVE defenseman?

Ive never agreed with how defenseman are rated. Theyre rated on ****ing offense.

At least we aren't the Oilers.

Oh, and Mike Green is a defenseman? I didn't know that.

Why don't we just scrap stupid stats like sv% and goals allowed and judge goalies on +/-

Our place sounds about right, but Washington at the top really kills this list's legitimacy.

Chicago/Detroit should be the 1/2 IMO, Pittsburgh 3rd.

At the risk of sounding like I'm on the wrong side here, was it game one of the playoffs last year when he destroyed Sjostrom?

The guy might not be known for his defense, and he may never be known for his defense, but other than Staal who exactly is clearly better than him in their own end on this club?

I'm hoping Del Zotto grows into the same kind of player Green is. Good in his own end, scores a lot of points, and can throw a big hit every once in awhile.

I'm pleased to see Phoenix is rated 4th. At the risk of being a transplanted homer, I'd put them up against any other unit in the league. Not only do the Coyotes have the second best GAA in the league, their defense has scored more goals than any other unit. And they are deep. Yandle is a developing star, Jovo is having an all-star season, Michalek is a rock, Lepisto is a very good rookie and Aucoin and Schneider still have plenty in the tank. Schneider has made an incredible difference on the power play and will be a tremendous asset in the playoffs.

I've been saying for 3 summers now, including this past one that Schneider (or Zubov) would have been a wonderful signing for the Rangers. Would have made an ENORMOUS difference on the PP.

But yeah, the PHX D is quite strong.

The way Schneider's been has been really surprising. I thought his career was over when he got demoted to the A earlier this year.

19th sounds about right. I don't think that TSN's formula is entirely reasonable, but for us at least, it spits out a fairly accurate rating.

i think this years D corps absolutely played beyond they're talent and ability level

everyone knew coming into this season, with 2 rookies and redden on the blueline, that our D was in trouble

but anyone who really watched this season should notice that they outperformed expectations and were not the biggest problem on this team...not even top 3

that being said... move girardi, trade rosi, do everything possible to trade rosi, and sign/trade for some cheap 2nd-3rd pairing crease-clearing dmen
