iPhone OS 4.0

Revealed Thursday, April 8 at 10AM PDT, but released probably in June or July.

Confirmed features:
  • Multitasking (3GS and 3rd gen iPod touch only) - double-tap home button to start, and a 4-icon dock appears at the bottom to let you switch apps
  • UI changes (home screen backgrounds, new iPad-style dock appearance, folders for your apps, NEW CALCULATOR ICON)
  • iBooks
  • Game center - iPhone social gaming component (like XBOX Live)
  • Background VOIP - accept calls from Skype even when you're doing something else, like browsing the web.
  • Unified inbox, fast inbox switching, threaded email conversations
  • New, unified advertising system
  • SMS in-app quick reply

Only compatible with iPhone 3G, 3GS, iPod 2nd generation, iPod 3rd generation.

all 3 probably, or at least iphone and ipod touch. Would be kind of weird announcing changes to the iPad OS this soon after launch, but it's likely some will apply to it.

I think google maps will be gone, as it's been rumoured for awhile, multitasking is also likely.

What I would like them to do is allow widgets on the first screen, and keep everything else the way it is. I want mah widgets. But that wont happen.

I'd be really impressed if their multitasking implementation will be superior to webOS' implementation.

I think i like the webOS implementation better, but a taskbar is pretty swell too.

If there isn't a full bluetooth profile, huge fail for me. Not being able to change tracks on $100 BT headphones is absurd.

I'm kind of wary with the whole iAd thing. Sure its another way for developers to make money...but I'm not sure I like the idea of apple getting into the advertising business. Before, the apps were advertisements in and of themselves. Now we're going to have ads inside of ads inside of other ads. And all done in HTML 5? Very expensive and specific implementation if you ask me.

My 3Gs screen was shattered the other day, I was hoping we'd find something out about some new hardware. Phone's only about 4 months old, brand new contract. I'm screwed. $600 to buy the phone alone, at least $200 to fix the screen. No insurance, warranty doesn't cover it

I'm still hoping we'll see a hardware upgrade with the iPad/MBP alloy type case. It looks so much nicer and much more resilient.

I would look around. My friend had theirs fixed for $100.00 here in the Bay Area. Found on Craigslist, but person had website and a brick and mortar office. It looked and worked as good as new when done.

So this isn't true multitasking unless your app uses one of the 5 (?) background services (i.e. music stream or VOIP) ?

This seems to be very similar to what is being used in the upcoming WP7 (at least from reading the text description).

The only thing is we don't know how WP7 will allow the user to switch between apps.

If it's limited to certain APIs (multitasking), then jailbreak isn't totally irrelevant.

My iPod touch 2nd gen hardware isn't good enough to multitask anyway. The battery craps out fast (have had it for a long time), and there's substantially less ram than in the 3rd gen and 3GS.
It was pretty obvious not all models would support multitasking, hardware and batteries get dated. if they did multitask, it wouldn't be up to par imo.

Although, I am excited with 4.0. Lots of goodies, really like the inclusion of folders, even if you could do that with a jailbreak already (and the app that does it is so damn buggy, Apple's implementation is excellent).

iPad in fall eh...makes some sense, if you read up on rumours, it was suggested the OS'es wouldn't unify until 4.1 at the earliest.

No, 1.6 is superior because you don't need to be running specific APIs for multitasking, and Android already has unobtrusive advertising built-in with no need for separate ad app.

Looks like even Apple isn't immune from copying good ideas from other phone makers.

They would likely replace it with something worse for free. But not for a while. Google maps is still in 4.0. And yes it is for the 3G except the multitasking feature.

Multitasking sucks on the 3G anyway. At least the jailbreak versions do. You can have basically 3 things open before your system bogs down.

Yeah, I think you need the 3GS to get acceptable results, but with OS 4.0 coming soon I would think a new phone won't be to far behind and one would hope there would be a little performance boost to that as well.

4.3" iPhone with Snapdragon please.

Imagine Snapdragon on a super CPU friendly OS like iPhone OS. I mean its already insane on Android and WinMo, on iPhone OS it'll be ridiculous.

Too much power for a platform that doesn't need that much.
The only people who would benefit from better hardware would be Jailbreakers.
A bigger screen wouldn't hurt though.
