While less than 24 hours remain in the Minnesota Wild's 2009-2010 campaign and the golf clubs are almost ready to be unpacked, there is still some business to be taken care of against the Wild's biggest (yet seldom seen) rival in the Minnesota North Stars. There is no love lost between these two inner-city rivals during their four yearly match-ups as North Stars fans take over the Xcel Energy Center on a regular basis. The Wild, the featured team of St. Paul, have been quite successful in their young history countering the North Stars, the featured team of Minneapolis (despite playing in the Minneapolis suburb of Bloomington) by marketing towards the entire state's hockey culture and stealing away events like the Boy's High School Hockey Tournament (which was once played in the Met Center). As always, the Wild fans will be ready to heckle and boo the North Stars and remind those watching on television that North Stars owner Norm Green "sucks." However, there is a sense of honor between the two teams, as many Wild fans predict that the divided crowd will unite as one to honor what is likely to be North Star legend Mike Modano's final game.
Getting to know your opposing fanbase: Minnesota North Stars Edition
-Minnesota was admitted to the union as the thirty-second state on May 11, 1858.
-For some reason there is no Minnesota North Stars sub-forum on Hockey's Future. You would think for a team with so much history there would be one, but whatever.
-The North Stars were founded in 1966 as one of the first six expansion teams and were owned by a consortium of nine businessmen.
-Apparently Mike Modano is the entire North Stars team since Neal Broten and Derian Hatcher retired.
-Minnesota ranks among the healthiest states in the nation. With that said, the two teams are injury-riddled.
-Despite playing in an abandoned parking lot fifteen miles away from the Wild, the North Stars are not in the same division as their crosstown rivals. I blame Bettman, but then again it isn't like the Winnipeg Jets are in the Norris Division either.
-Wonder if owner Norm Green will come out to watch this game. I also wonder if there are enough security people to let him into the Xcel Energy Center, but that answer would probably be no. Wild fans hate Norm Green more than Philadelphia fans hate Santa (he's sort of the anti-Santa).
-The North Stars have never won a Stanley Cup despite reaching the finals twice (in 1981 and 1991).
-Think Wild fans will boo Modano. It might happen as he did disrespect coaching great Gordon Bombay back in 1992.
-Have been fused with the blood of the Cleveland Barons and San Jose Sharks.
-Lou Nanne. No one said anything about him, but if you are discussing the North Stars it's impossible to not mention Lou Nanne.
-Are looking to expand hockey into Texas. Like the Wild, the North Stars have their AHL franchise located in the Lone Star State.
-Are amazed that Modano will wear his regular jersey. That's just North Stars fans for you, I guess.
