Last Chance: Knock Out Those Arrogant Habs

From this morning's Toronto Sun:

Quote:
Had the New York Rangers lost to the Philadelphia Flyers Friday night, the Habs would have clinched a playoff spot, much to the relieve of their anxious fan base.

Instead, thanks to the Rangers 4-3 victory at Madison Square Garden, the Canadiens need to gain at least one point against the visiting Leafs on Saturday to control their own fate and ensure a spot in the post-season dance.

For the Leafs, who will miss the playoffs for a franchise-record fifth consecutive time, there would be no sweeter note upon which to finish an otherwise disappointing 2009-10 season than to spoil the Habs party.

“Unfortunately, our season ends (Saturday night),” Toronto coach Ron Wilson said. “I’d like to put some sand in (the Canadiens’) gears, if we have the opportunity.

“We haven’t played well for the last month. I’d like a solid effort and to finish on a good note.”

The Canadiens have been in a funk down the stretch, winning only three of their past 10 games and scoring just 20 goals in that time.

Now here come the Leafs, who have played the Habs tough all season. While the Canadiens are 3-1-1 in head-to-head play against the Leafs this season, every game has been a nailbiter, with two contests going to overtime and another two ending in shootouts.
Every single time the Leafs have had a chance to accomplish something this season - whether its making the playoffs or moving out of 29th place in the entire league - they have fallen dismally short.

Tonight Giguere for the first time in his storied career makes a significant start in his native Montreal. For the second time in a generation, the Leafs can play a role in eliminating their historic arch-rival Canadiens from playoff contention and give Toronto's long suffering fans SOMETHING to throw in the face of the arrogant, patronizing Hab fans who have tormented them for years.

No more moral victories.

No more progress with asterisks.

No more abject failure in the face of a must win.

Just FOR ONCE in the Burke/Wilson Era..............WIN A F-#$KING GAME THAT MATTERS!!!!

but if boston loses their last 2 games in regulation, montreal is in anyways

the only way montreal would be knocked out is if boston gets a point, NYR wins in over time or shootout and obviously... leafs win in regulation - that's a lot of pipedreaming

okk. Lets say the leafs beat mont in regulation--- would it not be smart for ny and phi just to decide to let the NYR win in overtime--- that way they both get in? sure it would mess with their seatings but--- its better than risking missing the playoffs.... no?

Not THAT much of an impossibility. Yes, it sounds ridiculously difficult, but when you think about it, it's quite possible. Leafs have played really poorly the past couple days though. It's almost like they just want the season over with and don't bother trying anymore. Hopefully the fact the Habs are our rival gives them some motivation to actually show up Saturday night.

Well it's true that whenever the Leafs have the chance to do anything that matters they fall apart. Eliminating the Habs would probably be too much pressure. Let's just hope it's not a blow-out against us.

The NYR Philly game has to be an overtime win for the Rangers, if that exact outcome doesn't happen both Montreal and Boston are in

Listening to that singing in Montreal with a Habs win is no way to end a season. Far better to get the enjoyment of reading panic threads on the Habs board for a day.

I'm certainly hoping to knock out the Habs. Hoping the Ranger/Flyer game goes into overtime is a huge if, though. Still, it'd be nice to eliminate the Habs. Talk about a sense of entitlement.

I am sure that they have all day meetings to-morrow to discuss that exact scenario!

I even heard they have called in Mike McMahon from WWE to assist in staging the game.

Good luck tonight leafs!!!

Be hilarious if you guys knocked out the habs!!!!

Was at a friend's house the other day, he is die hard Habs fans, his roommates are die hard leafs...

After the Canes beat the Habs my buddy was getting chirped all night "Wait till our young boys take you out Saturday... those young kids will step up to eliminate Montreal from the playoffs... Kessel will get a hat-trick... just you watch"

It was gold!!!

Good luck guys!

I want the Leafs to end the year on a positive after two horrible games.

Contributing to the Canadiens' demise might feel good, but I don't think it would be anything to celebrate...

Will use this for pre game talk then we will re-open the very fine GDT by Shane Ye.
Shane Ye, Zeke or any of the other traditional contributers to the GDT should PM one of the Mods to temporarily re-open the GDT so you can add your stuff then we will close it again till say 30 minutes before Game Time.

Go Leafs Go

noooo... because philly needs a point to clinch a playoff spot

if the rangers win in regulation, and we beat montreal, the flyers would be on the outside looking in, and the rangers and habs both make the playoffs... if that happens the habs play washington tho (which is basically like not making the playoffs anyways)

As long as the Habs end up 8th or lower they are eliminated.... a loss today puts them in that position.

Washington = You are eliminated 1st round (no team hovering around the lower half of the playoffs can handle Washington)
