Predict The 1st Round

Just a few more days until the draft, predict how you think the 1st Round will play out. I'm going to stick with the top 13 where most of the highly touted guys are, after that it's a crapshoot for me. Feel free to go as far as you please.

1. Edmonton - Hall

2. Boston - Seguin

3. Florida - Fowler/Gudbranson

4. Columbus - Gudbranson/Fowler

5. NYI - Gormley

6. Tampa Bay - Niederreiter

7. Carolina - Connolly/Johansen

8. Atlanta - Johansen/Connolly

9. Minnesota - Granlund

10. NYR - Tarasenko

11. Dallas - Skinner/Campbell

12. Anaheim - Etem

13. Pheonix - Burmistrov/Skinner

Mine is pretty much a carbon copy of yours. All the picks make sense for the teams. But of course no one can forsee the trades that might take place.

I feel certain that someone will trade down, but it's always hard to predict who and where. So this is just what I think will happen in the unlikely event there are no trades.

1. Hall - Oilers
2. Seguin - Bruins
3. Fowler - Panthers
4. Gudbranson - BJs
5. Connolly - Islanders
6. Gormley - Lightning
7. Niederreiter - Canes
8. Johansen - Thrashers
9. Granlund - Wild
10. Tarasenko - Rangers
11. Forbert - Stars
12. Skinner - Ducks

All I can say is whoever gets picks 3-7 right, I'll be impressed. There's just so many scenarios I could see going down at this point. It all depends on what the Panthers and Blue Jackets do at #3 and #4.

For some reason, I have a feeling we will end up with Gormley as well. I was trying to figure out a scenario where it made sense, and here it is.

I am officially copying DaveG's homework for my picks.

Even though there have been some reports that we will avoid drafting a defenseman early, I don't think we will see a better opportunity for JR to get over his phobia. Gormley is about as safe as you can get as for as defenseman go.

based on the Bruins trade today I'm changing things up a bit. I still have the defensemen going in that order, but I no longer see the Panthers trading down from #3 to #5 in order to get Connolly. They'll nab him at #3, Gudbranson or Fowler to Columbus, the other to the Isles, Tampa does Nino, we get Gormley.

1 Edmonton Oilers - Taylor Hall
2 Boston Bruins - Tyler Seguin
3 Florida Panthers - Brett Connolly
4 Columbus Blue Jackets - Eric Gudbranson
5 N.Y. Islanders - Brandon Gormley
6 Tampa Bay Lightning - Nino Niederreiter
7 Carolina Hurricanes - Cam Fowler
8 Atlanta Thrashers - Jeff Skinner
9 Minnesota Wild - Mikael Granlund
10 New York Rangers - Vladimir Tarasenko
11 Dallas Stars - Derek Forbort
12 Anaheim Ducks - Ryan Johansen
13 Phoenix Coyotes - Alexander Burmistrov
14 St Louis Blues - Austin Watson
15 Florida Panthers - Quinton Howden
16 Ottawa Senators - Jack Campbell
17 Colorado Avalanche - Emerson Etem
18 Nashville Predators - Mark Pysyk
19 Los Angeles Kings - Stanislav Galiev
20 Pittsburgh Penguins - Nick Bjugstad
21 Detroit Red Wings - Jonathan Merrill
22 Phoenix Coyotes - Dylan McIlrath
23 Buffalo Sabres - Jared Tinordi

26 Washington Capitals - Tyler Toffoli
27 Montréal Canadiens - Riley Sheahan
28 San Jose Sharks - Ryan Spooner
29 Anaheim Ducks - Calvin Pickard
30 Chicago Blackhawks - Tyler Pitlick

Of course trades will make this all pointless. I think I'm decent until the Blues, who I have no idea who they'll go for. I figured Florida will go for two forwards. The Sens picking a Swede was really baiting me, but I knew that if I put down a Swede, they'd go off the board completely to smite me, so instead, I didn't give them the chance. And I figured LA would go off the board with a guy with good fundamentals but a lot of room for improvement, so it was between Galiev or Straka.

Well, can't wait to see how wrong I am.

Sounds more like wishful thinking. No way Cam Fowler gets past the Islanders at #5. They certainly don't take Gormley over Fowler. NFW.

No, Gormley is simply a better overall defenseman, evident by many scout rankings. I've watched a lot of Fowler and he has tons of upside, but he's soft, sometimes struggles on man-to-man coverage, and tends to try the pretty play when a simple outlet pass would suffice. He has a lot of work to do in his own end. Gormley lacks the upside Fowler has, but he also plays an NHL suited style and will be a lock for some teams top 4.

Anyone who thinks there is a clear difference between these three clearly is only going by scouting reports, stats or simply just watches one of them way more than the other. When the Islanders drafted Hamonic, he was thought to be a shut down guy with limited offensive upside. When De Haan was drafted, he was thought of a more offensive oriented defenseman with room to grow defensively. Why would they draft another player with similar attributes to De Haan? Gormley makes more sense for them. He can be plugged into their top 4 by 2011-2012, and be the "safe" guy who'll play a simple mistake free game, while guys like De Haan have their defensive lapses here and there.

You don't build a house with just bricks. Gormley would be a nice middle ground for their upcoming D prospects. And it's not wishful thinking, I don't really want Fowler.
