The Kessel Injury

Kessel's mysterious injury during the last week turned out to be a torn abdominal muscle. It is not considered serious. Sort of good news - at least it wasn't an aggravation of his shoulder injury.

Quote:
“Not in terms of fitness. I wasn't where I wanted to be in terms of that,” said the winger, who often looked winded heading for the bench after a shift.

Kessel also suffered a tear in one of his abdominal muscles with four games remaining — oddly enough while playing Boston — and, though he was able to play through it, he was blanked over those final games.

While that latest injury may keep him from joining Team USA for next month's world championship, it won't keep him from getting stronger and fitter during the off-season in preparation for camp.

“It'll be a big difference. I really wasn't able to do much last summer,” he said. “I'll have a good summer working out and I'll be ready to go next year.”

That's exactly what coach Ron Wilson is counting on. He lumps Kessel in with other young players such as Tyler Bozak and Luca Caputi as those he feels must bulk up to handle the rigours of an NHL schedule.

“As soon as he gets over the little muscle injury he has, he's got to start working out and get himself in the best shape he's been in in his life,” said Wilson.

“He's got a summer where he can make himself stronger, get himself fitter so when the season starts, he's in the best shape of his life and he can maximize his God-given abilities.”

Hope this isn't his excuse to be lazy this off-season.

That's what I was thinking. He said he's goign to mostly rest, but yet mostly work out and get up to a fit level. Only time will tell.

I'm hoping that Bozak, Hanson, and Stalberg will also feel like working out over the summer and talk Kessel into it. It's probably more fun to hit the gym with some buddies and then head off to watch something like The Expendables (when it comes out).

Thanks man.

But hey I was fully recovered in 8wks from a hernia operation. Got a nice 5in scar for the trouble. IF he cant' be training by the Finals then I think you are on to something.

While that's a fun idea, the end result is he'll have the motivation to get in better shape or not.

I can't think of too many cases of abdominal injuries except for Mikael Renberg, who seemed to really be affected by that issue. Hopefully this isn't the same sort of thing.

Maybe it's just the way I remember it but I seem to recall Renberg having some awful luck with injuries. Didn't he wind up with an infected hand injury due to a cut from his skate laces (or something equally bizarre)?

I'm just glad he got through the year without reinjuring the shoulder. That would have been bad.

I seriously hope Kessel come to training camp ready to rip up the NHL. This guy has so much untapped potential. He can easily put up 80-90 points if he plays super-star mode for 80% of the game rather than 20% of the games.

Agreed. I want him to go back to that #1 draft pick type potential player.

They happen all the time, but are often term to be hip flexor or groin injuries.

I think this might be a bit off-topic!
