It was a nice treat to have a Leafs/Habs HNIC matchup with Bob Cole announcing tonight and by gum, he was in fine form.
He was excellent. His voice gets you so excited and he raises it at the perfect moments. Don't tell me about a name or two mixed up in 60 minutes of hockey. Cole is still the master and his voice to me means 'Hockey Night in Canada.'
Big Bob Cole fan, he's a great announcer and a damned legend. Would love to have him call the majority of the Leaf games, especially seeing as how I am not a Bowen fan at all.
Cole is amazing. He needs to like do a seminar with everyone else at CBC and teach them how to do play by play, because ohh baby, do the rest, ever, freaking stink.
Well said, Cole will always be the best hockey announcer - his game calls with Harry Neale were classic... and he's still got it. This whole notion that he's out of it is ridiculous...
I couldn't agree more with this thread. Yes, sometimes Cole may come off as a confused old man but like someone else pointed out, hearing Cole call a Leafs game reminded me of the good ol' days watching HNIC with my Dad growing up. My only regret is that Harry wasn't beside him instead of Greg Millen.
I really like Bob Cole and think he has the best voice in hockey...
Last night he had an okay game, but there were several parts where my buddies and I had to laugh. Just before the drop of the puck before one faceoff he was like "and the ref is holding the puck!".... well, no **** sherlock lol.
Another part..."And montreal makes the playoffs by an eyelash!".... er, why not a hair? lol.
Maybe I'm too young, but I just don't share the appreciation for Bob Cole. He can't do play-by-play anymore, the game just moves to fast for him. Try closing your eyes for a few minutes with him calling a game, you'll have no idea what's going on.
Not that I need someone to tell me what's happening, but that is what he's there for, and he does a terrible job.

You are right the game is now too fast for him and he does make mistakes. But dont you feel like you can almost feel a goal is coming up even before it does just based on Cole's excitement in his voice? I have always felt this way.

Not really. He seems to get excited over nothing, and goes without noticing when exciting things do happen. It's like the crowd will start to get loud and he'll go... "Oh!! That was(not sure what happened)... a great chance... by(can't figure out which player)... The Canadiens"

This is how I've always felt. The tone of his voice matches the game perfectly.
Even though he misses stuff sometimes - whatever, I'm willing to live with that.
edit: for anyone who is unaware, people have the ability to control your emotions through the modulation of their voice. Many preachers and other good public speakers are able to do it - I think Cole is one of those people.
