Well it's not like Jokerit can screw things up?

Good to have Uusikartano on the team and with one good extra winger Ässät could have a pretty good chance making the top-10.

Looks like Patrick Yetman is coming to Ässät:http://mrmadhawk.se/2010/august/yetm...ska-ligan.html

42 goals in a season in Norway: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=87XXAaDEar0
Yetman in MODO HOCKEY: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SXnXOH1pi_s

Now here's one option for the roster, but there are a million other options and I'm not jealous of headcoach Rautakallio making the decisions he will have to make.

Santavuori - Niemi - Huhtala

Savinainen - AUK - Yetman

Huhtanen - Kuparinen - Miller

Mutanen - Sillanpää - Mäkilä

+ Armia/Laaksonen/Palonen

HIFK are the favourites with Ville and Mikael. Though Riksman have to step up and stay healthy.

Kärpät will be in the top for sure too.

Jokerit will improve but still not sure is it enough for the title... but I think Kekäläinen will still change the team and try to make it better so let's see.

We aren't going to win this season. I just don't have that feeling of winning this year...

Or....Maybe that's a good thing.

But anyways, we don't have enough depth in the team.
After Haataja, Granlund, Peltonen maybe Ramstedt, there is no one with even decent puck skills.

Why is Salonen not listed in those ideas? I figured he would be a top line candidate. And I thought Savinainen was more of an energy player, rather than scoring line guy. Other than that, I think the team looks pretty decent this year.

Looking at Yetman's stats in Swedish hockey, and his 15 goals in 35 games for Pelicans in 06-07, I think he could be pretty great for Assat this year - says he's a sniper type player on the website, would do well with either Niemi or Uusikartano I think.

Yeah, not to mention the still wandering rumours about Ässät still being after one player. Now these might be only pre-season rumours but if indeed Ässät were to sign one player more I'd say they should go after a "tough guy", let's say someone like Toporowski, Rajamäki or possibly an AHL guy like Garth Murray. A guy like this would be a great balancing asset along side Uusikartano and Yetman (I'm assuming Santavuori - Niemi - Huhtala forms the other scoring line)

"toporowski" - AUK - Yetman
Santavuori - Niemi - Huhtala

That would leave the third line still having some decent scoring potential;

Huhtanen - Kuparinen - Savinainen

Now the problem is duo Salonen - Miller, both are too expensive for 4th line roles which should anywho be given to the kids (Armia, Laaksonen, Mäkelä, Sillanpää, Rendulic etc.)

Oh yeah he is an option but I feel like either Salonen or Miller will be gone before the season is over (hopefully atleast one of these guys will step up). Not feeling that great about those two signings at the moment.

If Toporowski is motivated, in good shape and comes in a decent price I'm all for him.

Czech 'sniper' Jakub Sindel transfers from Tappara to the Pelicans.

IMO a good pickup for the team, I was impressed by his play in the short stint he had with the club back in 08-09.

edit to add: KalPa sign Teemu Normio on a months tryout.

There was talk about Toporowski negotiating a contract with Ässät, but apparently he was asking too much money.

He's just being a part-time replacement for this weekends European Trophy finals in Austria because they have only 5 available d-men (injuries and U20-duties).

I would be very dissapointed if they signed him for the upcoming season.

ah right, thanks for that ChadS.

This may suprise a few folk or not but Patrik Forsbacka has signed for Newcastle Vipers of the British Elite League should be interesting to see how he gets on here.

He has tailed of somewhat the past couple of seasons but can still take care of the phyiscal side of the game and should be able to contribute at EIHL level.

He has got a cannon on him but it's rather bent most of the time.

And like expected Sami Mutanen gets a 1+1 contract with Ässät after a good pre-season.

Jakub Sindel and Mike York -> Pelicans

Kevin Doell and Shayne Toporowski -> Tappara

And just like that two of Ässät's biggest competitors go from being pretty much equal roster wise to being way stronger. Now Ilves is the only team with worse roster than Ässät and HPK is probably the closest one ahead. Upcoming season will be an interesting one that's for sure.

Tomas Zaborsky -> Ässät

Zabbbboooooooooooooooooooooo!!

So who's out, is it Normio (who'd be easier to get rid off, since he's on a try-out period) or Miller (who'd be a more logical choice since he's a "scoring line supposed-to-be" and should be competing for the same positions Zaborsky will be)? Problem with Miller is, no one is going to be willing to take his contract or even take him and partially pay his salary, so basically Ässät would have to buy out his contract. Interesting times, here's hoping it's Miller who'll bag his back bags, as Normio is way more useful in the lower lines.

Rumours are getting stronger and stronger everyday for Tim Stapleton's comeback to Jokerit.

Also Jokerit are lookind D-man and goalie. But I guess that D-man isn't coming. Goalie may come but that's not a "star goalie".

I didn't see here mention that Eric Perrin did 2-year contract with JYP. Good signing I guess.

I think it should be Miller, as it was sort of a bust signing in the first place. His ceiling is a solid ECHL player, he can't even break into the AHL. You don't think anyone would take him? Maybe another team would have (false) hopes that he'd turn out well as a scoring line player. Assat is really building for a championship run. Still winning without Huhtala, Niemi, Salonen. Making good mid-season moves. Awesome to have Zaborsky back!

Also, Steve McCarthy -> TPS

Don't know the terms of his contract but it's a good signing for TPS. I've always loved McCarthy, he's an old Blackhawks 1st round bust. Great for TPS's PP.

Robert Petrovicky -> KalPa

20 points in 34 KHL games last season, should be a good signing for second line center duties.

Lots of good guys coming to the league recently; Perrin, McCarthy, Zaborsky now Petrovicky.

We will see who will get the boot out of the duo Miller/Normio. Normio and Miller looked pretty good against Tappara on Saturday, but at this point I have no idea which one or will both be with the team the whole season. Miller would be the better choice of letting someone go, but Normio the easier one.

Don't know about championship runs, but at the moment it sure is looking good even with the injuries and the "10th place = championship" before the season is slowly turning into a "if more things go right than wrong = top-6 and a playoff-spot". And that would require more solid play from Kilpeläinen (biggest factor) and not so many injuries any more.

Likely Huhtala and Niemi will be back pretty soon while Salonen's shoulder-injury could keep him out still for a while, so the offencive lines pretty soon could probably look like this:

Santavuori - Uusikartano - Armia
Zaborsky - Niemi - Yetman
Huhtala - Kuparinen - Savinainen
Mutanen - Sillanpää - Huhtanen

+ Mäkilä, Salonen, Laaksonen, Miller, (Normio)

Tom Preissing won't be coming to Kärpät. Deal is off.

Interesting signings, especially the Veilleux one, if he's the guy I'm thinking he is, he should do pretty fine in SM-Liiga, fast guy with a decent shot.

Yeah I worded that wrong probably, didn't meant that they're building a championship-caliber team, but they are making good mid-season moves and pulling out a lot of stops to be competitive.
