His shoulder also wants out of his body.

I wouldn't touch Souray with a 10 foot pole if I was Gauthier. His best years are clearly behind him and with that contract, it wouldn't help us at all.

Unfortunately Souray is too banged up and is just getting slower. Spezza owned that guy so imagine if he wound up on the ice with the likes of Ovechkin/Crosby etc. on a regular basis.

I loved him when he was here but his best days were here. Too many injuries.

We need to get rid of veteran defencemen not add them.

Getting Souray back is taking a step backwards even if it's for Hamrlik

I gotta give Gainey props for not resigning Souray at the ridiculous price he wanted and signed Hamr for what they offered him. It's safe to say that Hamr was the waaaaaay better choice and I'm happy we signed him over Souray. Yes, I was happy at the time as well.

Cap hit wise, no difference, pay roll wise big difference. Now if they could get a new defensive coach that absolutely loooooves Gomez, we'd have the base for a deal.

Oil fan here. Do you guys recall Souray trashing management in Montreal at any time? I recall there was a little bit if I am correct... I don't know why he spoke out now... in most Oiler fans minds he was probably gone by next year anyways. Stupid move on his part, it lessens the chance he'll be dealt, or how easy the deal will come in my opinion.

Team's that didn't make the PO...

Out of all the team's that missed the PO which one's would you say have the brighter future and which one's would you say will still "suck" in ~3 years? Reasons why

1 Edmonton Oilers
2 Toronto Maple Leafs
3 Florida Panthers
4 Columbus Blue Jackets
5 New York Islanders
6 Tampa Bay Lightning
7 Carolina Hurricanes
8 Atlanta Thrashers
9 Minnesota Wild
10 New York Rangers
11 Dallas Stars
12 Anaheim Ducks
14 Calgary
13 St. Louis Blues

Carolina will probably be in the Eastern Finals next year.
I'd say Edmonton is the next rising team, especially with a Taylor/Tyler coming in.
Florida isn't as bad as people think. I have faith in Burke's abilities, and I know everything is going to plan. Or almost, a cup wining GM doesn't trade away all his picks. He knows what he's doing. I feel the Ducks are going to bounce back. Tampa has a bright future.

I think Calgary is in horrible shape. They have little to no assets. Bouwmeester can rebound, but right now he's not looking too good. They will never be able to win with Iginla. He's worth so much that they actually need to trade him to get more pieces. Kinda like Kovalchuk in Atlanta. One superstar isn't worth a bunch of smaller pieces.
Also screwed are the Rangers. I don't see much happening with them, and they seriously need to take a step back and groom some offensive guys.

Not really. The most controversial thing he ever said was a few months after leaving he said in a interview that he felt that Montreal wasn't too interested in re-signing him that offseaon until it became that they weren't able to sign anyone else. But that was true, so yeah...

Not that bad of a backup if Gauthier decides to trade 1 of Halak or Price

Biron isn't a bad option either, not that bad of a goalie and he can talk to the media and keep the pressure off the kids

Brighter Future: These teams are missing just a few pieces to make it season after season.

St. Louis Blues.
New York Islanders.

Tanking for sure:

Dallas Stars. (Finance wise)
Florida Panthers. (Finance + Market situation)
Calgary Flames (Rebuild mode)
Carolina Hurricanes (Yep smells like Rebuild time)

Will always suck regardless:

Toronto Maple Leafs (Thank you)

I'd rather have Turco. I believe Turco is better, plus if our goalie got hurt, I'd be much more comfortable with Turco in net. That said, I don't think Turco will come cheap, nor do I think he wants to be a backup.

Not a good one, either. Even at his age, and considering he's coming off a $5.X million/year contract, he is likely still going to cost more than the Habs currently spend on their top 4 goaltending options. I couldn't imagine a worse use of cap space, and that's saying a lot given my opinion on record with regards to Gomez.

Neither is Biron, btw, and no one will ever convince me otherwise. He's cheap enough now (who knows how much he asks for in the off season), but when shopping for a backup, if you go into the 30+ age bracket, it's probably best to try to find someone with more than 20-some games of playoff experience. Call me old fashioned...

Dammit Bruins don't get bumped off the #2. I was hoping the Panthers won.

Thank god I was wrong. Would've hoped they got bumped down to third or something, but whatever. At least they didn't win it.

Carolina looked like world beaters in the 2nd half of the season, and the latest Sutter is one hell of a two-player for them, and a great compliment for Stall. McBain was also a very good defensemen for them late in the season, and improved their defense a bit. And besides, a guy named after a classic Simpsons character that constantly kicked ass can't be that bad.

Really, the Hurricanes just need a couple shrewd free agent signings (probably one more good winger, and one more good defensemen) to become a solid playoff team again.

Edmonton will be getting an impact player this year that'll help them a lot within three years. I think the Oilers will probably suck again next year, but in two to three years, their young talent will start to really turn that team around.

And St. Louis would be my third pick of teams that clearly have brighter futures. Boyes and Backes both regressed this year for St. Louis, so if they can bounce back, that'll add a lot of punch to the Blues' offense. St. Louis also has a lot of excellent young defensemen.

Oh, and they have that dynamite winger Matt D'Agostini!

Sorry, couldn't resist joking around a bit there, lol. But seriously, the Blues do have a bright future.

Barring a massive free agent splash for either or both teams, I don't feel very good about the Maple Leafs or the Thrashers turning it around anytime soon. It certainly wouldn't surprise me to see them still sucking three years for now.

The Leafs won't be getting the usual benefits from sucking (i.e. a high draft pick), so it's hard to see how they can turn it around with out making a big free agent splash.

Atlanta does have a great young defenseman in Bognosian, and some good young players, but I just don't see them putting it altogether for awhile. Especially with Waddell managing that team.

While he's the last guy that has any business calling for a GM's head, I have to agree with Mike Milbury saying that Waddell should be fired.
