The Official 2010 Offseason Thread

There will be lots to discuss. Player exit interviews are today, we'll likely be hearing Jim Rutherford's offseason gameplan, expectations for next season, etc. The Draft Lottery is tomorow night. A lot going on until the 2010-2011 season begins in Finland in roughly 6 months.

Discuss as you please.

I'd be very surprised if their draft position changed, for better or worse. Since 1995 only twice has a team outside the top 5 won the lottery, and none since 1999.

The interviews have begun and the tweets are coming in like crazy. Not listing all, but the ones of most importantance:

Wow, you're not kidding with these tweets

I found these two pretty interesting as well:

Quote:

Whitney: thought he would next player to be traded after Thrashers' Ilya Kovalchuk. "Everyone thought I was going."
about 1 hour ago via web

Whitney: Surprised he was not traded at deadline but not disappointed.
about 1 hour ago via web
I'd love to know exactly what went down

Legace is a hoot and definetly a good guy to have in the locker room. I'm still torn on who I'd want a back up. Legace or Peters?

Can't say I won't be disappointed if we bring him back to pair up with Carson.

Send a message via ICQ to dmonk
Legace always had a great sense of humor. He'd make a great TV personality one day.

Agreed. During his time here Pothier was pretty steady with his play. He wasn't that flashy, but neither did he make many mistakes. As our defence will likely be younger next season, having a little bit of veteran presence and experience in Pothier wouldn't hurt.
And as he still has some hands and gas in the tank left, he wouldn't be that much of a burden.

Peters isn't ready, we saw that with the last few games he played. I'd love to have Pothier back though

I have no problem bringing Pothier back, but I want it to be a 1 year deal.

No offense to the guy, but I just don't think Peters is ready yet. Legace was more than solid for us, and I certainly wouldn't mind seeing him in a Hurricanes uniform next season.

I would be surprised if he'd take only a 1 year deal though (unless that is all he can get elsewhere) as there is really no incentive for him to take it. His wife and 3 kids stayed in DC after the trade to Carolina. I would think that he would want to get as much stability as possible if he is moving them (rather than sign a 1 year deal). I realize pro players know and accept that there is a chance they have to uproot their families throughout their career, I just doubt he wants to do that for a 1 year deal and then do it again next year.

I'd be ok with a longer deal as long as it is reasonably priced and doesn't contain one of JR's patented NTC's. Even if we sign another top 4 via UFA, in 2 years, we'd still only have Pitkanen, Gleason, McBain, UFA, Carson, and Pothier. Borer and Rodney might be ready..but personally, I'd rather be relying on them to fill in for injuries/#7 than penciled in the top 6. I'd be ok with Pothier in the top 4 if there was a longer term injury. I'm not as comfortable with Carson, Rodney, Harrison, or Borer in that role.

Who is going to impress on the "leadership" the importance of winning games early. After the past couple of years, I think the Vets need to get that message more than the youngsters.

All I want this offseason is for JR to promise a legit, NHL training camp. I'm frankly tired of his "slotting" system. I don't care how much experience a guy has, how much money he makes, or his golf handicap, if he shows chemistry and ability to play on the first line, then DAMMIT PLAY HIM ON THE FIRST LINE. Pro sports is one of the last remaining meritocracies on the planet, but you wouldn't know it watching the Canes play.

I want real competition, blank slates, open minds. Is this too much to ask?

Um ... Mr. Cole ... THE YOUNGSTERS WEREN'T EVEN HERE EARLY IN THE SEASON. The youngest player on the Canes' opening night roster was Eric Freakin' Staal.

I don't see JR just letting Ray walk after hanging onto him at the trade deadline. I'm with you, I don't know as I want to see Ray brought back, especially the Ray from the last month or so...

However, I won't be too ticked off if he is brought back because I'm fully expecting it. The thing that will tick me off beyond measure is if he gets more than a year or has a NTC or anything related to it. Regardless of what JR wants, he should have learned his lesson on that one this year with Ray.

Hey, I had an idea with NTCs. Give a guy a NTC for x minus one year of an x-year contract. Nobody should have an NTC in their walk year.

Or better yet, don't give them NTCs at all if they really don't deserve one.

^There is a reason I stay far away from the FB comments. Those people who comment over there are literally a bunch of morons. Every now and then you'll get someone who actually knows what they are talking about, but 99.9% of the time its the same people who call the post game and tell MM that we need to put Eric Staal in Albany.

You guys obviously don't know what an asset Rod still is to the Canes, if he decides to retire at least it isn't because he is washed up!!!

This one isn't to shabby either.
