We do care about it. Salary cap midpoint. Any spending we do in the off-season, assuming the cap does not go up, will have to be the result of cost-saving elsewhere. Otherwise, revenue sharing takes a hit.

I'm not totally sure how revenue sharing works, but isn't it only determined by attendance and revenue? I'm not totally sure what you meant by "cap hit."

There are two rounds of revenue sharing. To qualify for the second round you cannot have spent above the cap midpoint.

It is mentioned, briefly, in the following article.

Yeah, I know, but it's not as funny if Nasher is asking for a D-Man.

Besides. I can't make fun of Jokinen.

Fair enough. I withdraw my response on the basis that even if it's inaccurate as to needs, it's still pretty damn funny.

As I've said for a while... you know you've finally arrived when everyone is trying to steal your players.

If Sheldon Souray is truly available Howson would be dumb to not at least put an offer out on the table. If the asking price isn't too steep he should be all over this.

Souray is the legit top pairing defenseman that can quarterback a PP the Jackets have been desperately trying to acquire for years. The guy is the definition of a leader. Guy leaves it all on the ice, and is willing to stick up for his teammates. Then there's that wicked slapshot he possesses from the blueline. He could also be a great mentor for John Moore.

No joke, I thought the trade boards were fun at the deadline, but they are even better now

Could he be had for a 2nd round pick? He injury prone, and getting up in age, but I think he could help us.

Here's Spector's comment on Souray:

"As I noted yesterday it could be difficult to find a market for an overpaid, aging, one-dimensional blueliner with a lengthy injury history. His public criticism of Oilers management only makes it worse."

Not exactly a ringing endorsement!

I'm not nearly as high on him as most people but Sheldon Souray is somebody who really intrigues me.

Last I heard of him, he was only willing to waive his no-trade clause for a few teams. Columbus wasn't mentioned as one of the teams, but apparently he really wants out of Edmonton I can't say for sure if he'd come to Columbus, but he could be given the Bryan McCabe treatment (Toronto made life very difficult for McCabe, all but forcing him to accept a trade to Florida.)
His NTC was only for the first 3 years of his deal. As of July 1st, they can trade him anywhere they please. I actually think Columbus would benefit a fair bit from Souray, but he's got a big ($5.4M) cap hit, and I don't really know how much room the Jackets are going to have next year after all the extensions are accounted for.

He'd certainly be the powerplay weapon you need, and unlike Modin, Souray gets his shot off very quickly. A lot of times, he'll quickly let go a snap shot that I swear has to be close to 90mhp. It's not just his slapshot that's hard.

Personally, I was never a fan of the original signing, but Souray is a useful player, just a little too specialized in what he brings. If you've got a decent ES team but are in need of a guy who'll improve the PK, PP, and are looking for some toughness on the back end, he's worth it. But if you have a big shot from the point and a number of usefull penalty killers already, he might not be worth going after.

To Edmonton:
Mike Commodore + RFA rights to Anton Stralman (or sign + trade)

To Columbus
Sheldon Souray

2010 Blue Line

Souray/Hejda
Klesla/Russell
Tyutin/Methot

Clitsome

I'd go for this

Considering the Oilers would have only 2 defense pairings worth of signed defensemen, adding a guy like Stralman to the deal would probably make a lot of sense. As an Oiler fan, I'd rather Methot, but the idea at least seems reasonable.

Proposal from Oiler Fan

Would you guys trade Commodore and Boll to Edmonton for Souray and O'Sullivan?
