Capology 2010-11

I did one of these last offseason, so I might as well get one going for this offseason.

As far as I figure, when including our RFAs, we're heading into next offseason with 4 roster spots open, possibly 5. Mind you I think all but maybe one or two will be filled from within, but that's just how I see it right now. I'll have the open slots marked with *UFA*, with who I think will be signed or called up to fill that spot in the lineup in the brackets. Cap hits are in the brackets for existing contracts.

Nice breakdown DaveG.

So, it looks like if we fill most of our spots from call-ups, and spend 2.5 - 3 million on a d-man UFA, we are possibly looking at about 48 million in salary cap.

Yep. I figure we could easily be around that mark in salary for this coming season. I'd like to say I can tell for sure but I really have no idea what it's going to take to bring back Pothier or Babchuk. If it's about 1.75 or so for either we're in a comfortable position to make an addition in UFA on the back end and still be well under where we were last season. I wouldn't bet against a move to bring in someone like Liles or someone else we've been going after for a few years either this offseason. Still, I think we're going to be rather quiet this year.

I think that looks like a bleak cap situation... 11-12, looks like where we pick up flexibility dropping Sammie, Cole, and Brindy ($9 mil). If the kids can develop next year while competing for a 6-8 spot, and the Checkers kids develop, we have a chance to make a big FA signing next off season and be ready for a top 2 seed in 11-12

We're actually in great shape cap wise for next season already considering that the cap is expected to only dip to 56 mil or so, only a few hundred K below what it's at now.

Here's a partial list of UFAs for the 2011 season that are currently under 33:

C Brad Richards
C Joe Thornton
C Patrice Bergeron
C Mikko Koivu
RW Simon Gagne
RW Justin Williams
RW David Backes
LW Alexander Semin
D Zdeno Chara
D Ed Jovonovski
D Andrei Markov
D Tomas Kaberle
D Kevin Bieksa
D Christian Ehrhoff

ours:
C Rod Brind'Amour
C Patrick Dwyer
RW Chad LaRose
RW Erik Cole
LW Jussi Jokinen
LW Sergei Samsonov
D Joni Pitkanen

so we'll have to shell out to keep Jokinen and Pitkanen probably, LaRose won't make much more then he does now if he comes back. We'll have a ton of money to go after any of the names I just posted.

Personally I'd like Gagne or Backes plus one of those big time defensemen... but Backes, Bergeron, Bieksa and Ehrhoff are probably the only realistic targets there.

I don't either. This year it was probably around $50 million wasn't it? I know the cap number was a lot higher than the actual money. I'm expecting a $2-4 million reduction from last year...

I don't think there's any way we sign anyone unless Brind'Amour retires, and even then we may not.

Just to throw the numbers out there for those wondering, if Samsonov is bought out of his last year (2.533 cap hit, 2.8 actual salary):

The buyout would cost $933K in actual dollars in 2010-11 and 2011-12.
The cap hit would be $667K in 2010-11 and $933K in 2011-12.

The reason I think this is possible is that Samsonov's buyout plus the salary of Boychuk or Tlusty to replace Samsonov still saves approximately $1 million in 2010-11. So they would effectively be pushing $1 million in salary back a year and keeping an additional prospect in Raleigh by making that move.

Well, I'd like to bring something up that I dont see as being discussed at this point.

Why not make a big splash for a winger this year to play with Staal next year to make sure the Canes have a couple guys playing in the All Star game that we will be hosting. I think that is one of the most important things, making sure we have as many players as possible participating. We would be close to the cap next year, and then as mentioned above, would be back down a bit the following season with the likes of Cole, Samsanov, Brind'Amour off the books.

Thoughts?

And what would be some of the possible "splash" wingers available this summer?

cant forget chicago needing to move some salary, and needing little to no salary going back the other way. i know from jrs remarks that he didnt expect much in terms of forwards changing this summer, but i hope he doesnt intentionally take us out of the running for some these guys just because of the "plan". a guy like sharp would be worth switching some things up, he would look good on staals wing or as a 2a/b center situation with sutter. ladd would give us beef on the 3rd maybe 2nd line.

bolland would be perfect for center, id overpay to get him and he is tied up for a few years. theyd be stupid to trade him tho.

Kovalchuk would want too much, Kariya already said no coming here once and signed with Nashville for 500k less coming out of the lockout, Tanguay sucks and Svatos isn't splash. I'd love to see Marleau here since if he didn't work out at wing he could be a #2 Center, but he's likely to command a lot of money too. Frolov would be a good choice too, but again, he'll be expensive.

I'd also like to see Stempniak here but I'd be very surprised if Phoenix didn't re-sign him

Picking up a skill player from Chicago would not be a bad thing to look into. Dont think the Canes could afford a Marleau, but wouldnt mind seeing it. Frolov has been better this year, but Tanguay, Kariya and Svatos arent what I was thinking of when I made the previous post.

JR has been a fan of Bolland since his junior days. He usually ends up getting the guys he likes, eventually.

What is the story with Kariya? I'd love to get him here for 1-2 year for right price. Versteeg is the option i like. Young guy, good speed, very good two-way game.

Kariya ponders his options for next season.

Sounds like he's looking for a Cup contender wherever he goes next year. Doesn't sound like a return to the Blues is likely, and I doubt the Canes are what he's looking for either.

I'm honestly not sure I want much part of Frolov. There is a nice package of talent there, but its when he feels like using it. Watching his efforts in the playoffs so far has been brutal. There is a lot of times when the guy has no fight in him, to see it in the playoffs is pathetic. No will to compete, win battles along the boards when the need arises. Just lazy. The guys on Hockey Night In Canada had a clip on him and it was headshaking. He's a big 'meh' from me. He may turn it around, he may not. He may be simply what he is and you just deal with it. I do know I'm not interested in a Kovalev-like guy here, talent or not, I have no use for those guys. When the talent is there to reach great heights in the points column and your effort is a big reason why you don't reach those heights, it just doesn't settle well with me.

No way you like Cole on the 2nd line with Sutter and LaRose? I kind of like the way that sounds if we get the Cole from 2003-2008. If we get 40 points out of him, I like that line.

I do but I think I'd rather spread things out a bit more with our 2nd and 3rd lines assuming we go out and sign a #3 centerman. I think either way we're in tough shape there since neither Cole nor LaRose is a legit 2nd line winger. IF Cole can have a healthy season he may be able to prove he can be, but with how LaRose finished the season I put him there by default. Either way, if we have LaRose and Cole on the same line we're looking at a REALLY young and inexperienced 3rd or 4th line.

Would Carolina be interested in Bieksa at all? Could they afford him?

As a Vancouver fan I'm interested in reacquiring our 3rd round draft pick from you for offer sheet purposes and if at all possible one of your two 2nd round draft picks.

I was looking through your team to see if Vancouver could take on a salary dump to increase our trade value but it seems the only person you have that isn't performing up to par is Brind'Amour and Vancouver couldn't really fit him.

Would anything revolving around these pieces work at all -

Vancouver:
Bieksa, Bernier, 4th - 7th round 2010 draft picks

Carolina:
Ottawa's 2nd, Vancouver's 3rd, Chad LaRose, Brett Carson

Edit: Just saw you guys are looking to rid yourself of Samsonov?

Would -

VAN: Bieksa

for

CAR: Samsonov
Van 3rd round
Car 2nd rounder OR Ott 2nd and Carson

work?

I like Bieksa. I like his contract. I love the idea of dumping Samsonov. The way I see this offer from Carolina's side, is that it's worth Vancouver's third to dump Samsonov, so those cancel out. That leaves our second (or Ottawa's second plus Carson, which is probably too much) for Bieksa.

So, our second for a 29-year-old, right shot, tough defenseman who can skate, and has one year left at a reasonable $3.5 million (I like that he's in a contract year)? I think yes.

Bieksa is a shell of his former self. Chicago abused him and made him look like he had lead skates. No way in hell I give up all that for Bieksa. I'd rather just waive Sammy if that's what it takes to dump his contract. Most Canuck fans were calling for him to be traded this offseason.. they just wanted to dump his contract. And now he's supposedly worth a 3rd, 2nd AND Carson? I know we're dumping Samsonov back on them but like I said, just eat his contract and send him to the minors if you want to dump his contract.
