Eric Selleck signs with the Cats!

http://blog.syracuse.com/college-spo..._pro_deal.html

Quote:
Oswego State forward Eric Selleck has signed a contract with the NHL's Florida Panthers, a source close to the team told TheVOTL.com today. Selleck, the 2010 runner-up for the Sid Watson Award, departs SUNY Oswego after just two seasons in the green and gold.
No words from any of the local reporters about it yet, but anyways seems like a great signing!
Stats this season:
GP Goals Ass. Points P/G PIM GW PPG
28 21 33 54 1.9286 56 2 6

I don't know anything about him, but it's probably a cheap deal, so I'm glad we signed him.

SUNY Oswego is D-III, so it's nothing to get excited about. I can't believe he gets 105K in the AHL. And 1.175M in the NHL, that's seems a bit high. I mean, he put up nice points, but it was in D-III. I think we overpaid for this guy.

If he turns out like former Middlebury Panther Keith Aucoin (also division III), then it's worth the minor league money.

He was runner-up for the Sid Watson Trophy which goes to the best division III hockey player. For the hell of it, I looked up the past winners of the Sid Watson Trophy. The only name I recognized was Aucoin. I'm willing to wager right now that Eric Selleck will have as much of a future as a Florida Panther as Tom Selleck will!

It seems that article was reporting Selleck's total salary. He gets 50K in the AHL next season, and 55K in 2011-12. He gets 575K in the NHL next season, and 600K in 2011-12. That's a lot better.

Keith Aucoin wasn't exactly a key player for Carolina, but I believe he won the AHL scoring race this season. I also remember his name being frequently mentioned in the local news when he was with Middlebury. If Selleck makes the same impact in the AHL as Aucoin, it will be great for Rochester's offensive production.

EDIT: Just to clarify, I know Aucoin is currently signed to Washington, but Carolina was his first NHL team.

There are some great players in D3 that could easily be good players in D1. Sometimes great talents end up n D3 because of circumstances. This is a gamble and since we need guys in Roch, it's a good one. These are the types of hidden gem/diamond in the rough type moves that we should have been making all along (i.e. scouting leagues in Russia, Sweden, etc.. for talented guys that may have been a little off the map).

I grew up with this kid, played minor hockey with him, and went to school with him. You guys are getting a gritty forward with scoring touch!

I've religiously watched Oswego hockey the last 2 years. Selleck has been our best player for those 2 years. He hits, and he hits hard. Most of his penalty minutes are from clean hits, but since he hits so hard the refs see a heap on the ice and call roughing or charging. He has a pretty nasty shot too. I bet he will be willing to throw down too. He hasn't been able to since its college but hes come pretty close. When he gets angry that's when he plays his best. Consistency is my only problem with him. Some games he doesn't hit hard or even at all. However, i think that was because of a shoulder injury late in this past year. He is pretty quick too, but on the AHL level he may be considered average. Many believe he should have gone D1 and that we were lucky to even have him for the past 2 years.

Seems like a pretty solid signing!
Here is some more info:

http://www.collegehockeystats.net/teamstats/oswm
http://www.oswego.edu/athletics/news_story.html?id=9338

"He is the first Oswego State player to be named to the All-America Team since Ryan Ellis was named to the Second Team in 2008."

I watched him play in junior A in Pembroke, best fighter I've ever seen in the league, and a wicked shot. Could be one of the few d3 guys that makes a difference on the NHL.
