Atta boy Fletch! Fletch was obviously not impressed, figured he would keep him around for about a year just like Constantine, now Fletch has no excuses for drafting a dud...

That's what I'm talking about. Expectations managed!

Embedding disabled upon request...boo-urns!
EDIT: On second thought, it was worth having to open another window; however if this was hockey someone would have gone Dale Hunter on him in about three seconds.

Okay, now Fletch definitely gets an A for year 1.

I'm surprised that Thompson lasted this long. I met the guy once at a STH lunch two years ago. What a Poindexter! This club doesn't need any arrogant lawyers from Canada evaluating hockey talent.

Not until the Wild win the next 25 Stanley Cups with teams of all Minnesotans.

I think I read on Russo's twitter that it's been Asst. GM Brent Flahr's scouting the whole year, and TT was just off to the side?

Looking at his blog, it appears as if Thompson has slowly been phased out of the head scouting operations over the year and was at the point where the team was just sitting on his contract waiting for it to expire.

Yeah, I just read it too. That seems to be the sentiment, so we can't blame TT for drafting this year. It's all on Fletch and his people. I can't wait to see what happens this draft. I'm super excited to be able to add a prospect of high note.

After mapping the ins and outs of the Thompson situation to the Abel Assesment for Sexual Interest, I'd definitely say yes, it is weird.

That was a good read, Thanks Gopher. From the title & the caption I thought he was going to sound like an a-hole in the article but overall I think that he was reserved & cordial. I think when you take a qoute like "I wasn't coming back..." out of context it sounds pretty childish but in context I felt that he gave a respectable interview..

Anywho, here's another read from Russo in the StarTrib..

Some interesting qoutes to note from the article:

Quote:
Since 2000, Wild draft picks have played 4,246 games, the most of any team in the NHL. Fourteen draft picks played for the Wild this season.
Quote:
Lack of top-six forwards: Arguably, the Wild hasn't developed a top-six forward since Pierre-Marc Bouchard (8th overall, 2002) and only three in history (Bouchard; Marian Gaborik, third overall, 2000; Mikko Koivu, sixth overall, 2001).
Quote:
Pouliot was drafted fourth overall -- four spots ahead of Devin Setoguchi (San Jose) and seven spots ahead of Anze Kopitar (Los Angeles).
Quote:
Compounding the scrutiny over Sheppard is the fact that a number of players taken after him -- Florida's Michael Frolik (10th overall), Bryan Little (12th), Michael Grabner (14th), Chris Stewart (18th), Claude Giroux (22nd) and Patrik Berglund (25th) -- appear to be developing into solid NHL forwards.
The last 2 are kind of depressing huh? haha

-I'm not surprised about the first note because the Wild are an expansion team founded at the beginning of the decade and a lot of bad picks suited up during the early years (I'm looking at you Sekeras). However, that list is extremely top-heavy and half of the fourteen players ended up playing less than forty games. Hell, there are only ten draft picks who have played more than 100 games for Minnesota.

-Throw in how the eight players picked ahead of him were and it looks like Sheppard is becoming the biggest bust of the 2006 draft, which would make him Minnesota's second in three years.

We get an award for that, right?

Sure, it's the "Kevin McHale-Doug Risebrough Excellence in Drafting" Award.

EDIT: On second thought, that's not appropriate given McHale's name is on the award. Hmm...the Joe Smith Excellence in Drafting award?

Only the last one, as I would have drafted Little.

The 2005 draft is an example of how the draft is a crapshoot. I bet even Chuck Fletcher wishes he would have picked Kopitar. Many times you draft elite talent, like the Wild with Pouliot, and it doesn't work out.

for sure. Hindsight is 20/20. Looking back it's easy to say "we should have drafted_________" but the fact of the matter is that just like you said, it's a crap shoot.

I'm not sure if you guys read the article attached to my post but Thompson makes a comment about drafting AJ Thelan I think it was, (he admited was his worst drafting decision) and according to him, A few different GM's said they would have taken him as their pick if we didn't, so who's going to succeed & who's going to fail is nothing more then an educated guess at best...

Now we just need to hope that we start making better educated guesses...
