before, the deal broke down when the injury to O'Neil was announced. Then he was just sitting in the Bell Centre when Glen Sather gave him a call and told him take Alex Kovalev.

Thanks guys... I couldn't remember, and was wondering if BG would make an inquiry once again about Oneill, even with Kovalev in the line-up?

From what I heard about the O'Neill situation, O'Neill was on the table to either the Canucks, Habs, or Stars. However, stupidly, Rutherford played him one more game and he got injured. Ridiculous, eh?

I'd love to get O'Neill... but not for Zednik.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm sure I heard or read somewhere that Gainey was also in talks with Washington about Lang...anyone else hear this?

Lang was the guy he wanted, yes. But he "settled" for Kovalev.

Lang was the Right handed center he wanted.

I am still surprised he would go after a scoring center like him..I guess they were trying to run the 3 lines thing...

I don't think that ribs can be moved at right. He is the last guy to consider for this poistion because you gotta be a good skater and strong in the corners.

That would be a horrendous transaction considering Lang's older then Kovalev and has something like $10,000,000 left on his contract.

That's exactly how much he has left.

Even if there's a 1 year strike, you're going to have a 35/36 year old at $5,000,000.

That's overpayment.

I agree but didn't he lead the NHL in scoring?

My recollection is Lang first got traded to Detroit. (Apparently this is the guy BG wanted) Then BG obtained Kovalev early in March.

Subsequently when approaching the trade deadline date there were rumors about BG being interested in O'Neil. Unfortunately (or fortunately) O'Neil hurt is shoulder 1 day prior to the trade deadline.

Conclusion ... If the rumors are correct, BG was interested in bringing in O'Neil even with Kovalev in the line-up.

Yes, on a PP with Jaromir Jagr, Peter Bondra, and Sergei Gonchar.

He's been a career 60-65 point player. $5,000,000 after the CBA will be way too much.

So... do you think there will be any more talks between Rutherford and BG this summer?

At 2-2.5M$ I keep Zednik over a 3.7M$ O'neill.

But if Zednik is seeking a contract in the range of 3M$ then I'd rather pay the 700K$ and get a little more bang for my bucks. O'neill is a proven 30 goals scorer (Three straight 30+ goals season) something that the Z man is not (one selfish 31 goals season).

Zednik also held out for 100K$ 2 seasons ago and I'm sure Gainey is aware of this. He's got a greedy agent and his contract is up this summer. In that light a Zednik-O'neill swap would have made a lot of sense at the deadline. Does it still make sense ?

I heard Gainey offered Hossa and 1st for O'Neill, but Rutherford wanted Higgins straight up. I think there will definitely be talks between Gainey and Rutherford this summer, because I think a deal was real close.

I'd love O'Neil to join the Habs but not at any price (ie. Higgins). I wouldn't of minded a 1st pick and Hossa for him.

Yes, I do think there will be more discussions. The Canes 2nd round draft choice might also be at the heart of the conversation.
