Overview
Extra InformationMomentum has been fleeting in this Western Conference quarterfinal playoff series between the Detroit Red Wings and Phoenix Coyotes.

Just when one team thinks it has established some momentum, it disappears the next game. The clubs have alternated wins, resulting in a series tied 2-2 heading into Game 5 Friday at Jobing.com Arena.

"I don't see there being any momentum either way," Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said. "(Detroit Tigers manager) Jim Leyland always says momentum is as good as today's starter. That's hockey, too. I wouldn't spend a whole lot of time worrying about that. You got to be able to play."

So, just because his team turned in a solid effort in Tuesday's 3-0 win, players shouldn't think their performance will automatically carry over or that they've gained control of the series.

And they don't.

The Red Wings know they must continue to do what brought them success: skate hard, navigate through the neutral zone without too many turnovers, play physical against Phoenix's defense, crowd goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov in an effort to get second and third opportunities. And, of course, get another solid outing from their own goalie, Jimmy Howard.

"So far in this series, we haven't played two good games in a row," Detroit's Niklas Kronwall said. "We have to go after them and take care of the puck in the neutral zone, be quick to pucks in our own zone and just make sure that first pass is tape-to-tape, that way you'll spend way more time on offense."

Babcock said he'll start with the same line combinations from the last game. Dan Cleary will stay with Pavel Datsyuk and Johan Franzen, providing the top line with more speed.

"Cleary got to a lot of pucks for Pav and Mule, they spent way more time in the (offensive) zone than we would have otherwise," Babcock said. "The way this series is, both teams are playing in the neutral zone. And (because of) the lack of space, often you have to give up possession to get it back. So you got to be able to forecheck better. Cleary gives them that dimension."

The Darren Helm-Patrick Eaves-Kris Draper line, reunited the last game, must grind the puck in the Coyotes zone.

"I thought they were physical and they need to continue to be physical and get into the D as much as we possibly can," Babcock said.

Red Wings defenseman Brian Rafalski didn't practice Thursday at Alltel Ice Den, but said he will play Friday, which Babcock confirmed.

Rafalski was banged up in Game 3 but missed only a couple shifts.

The status of Phoenix captain Shane Doan (apparent right shoulder injury) will be determined at game time. He was on the ice for about half of Thursday's practice.

Doan was a punishing presence in Game 1, but the Red Wings have out-hit the Coyotes in each of the past three games.

"I think our forwards did a great job of lining up their D-men," Kronwall said. "Everyone is trying to play as physical as possible. Hopefully, that's something that can benefit us the longer this series goes."

Phoenix scored on its first three power plays of the series, but Detroit has killed 13 consecutive shorthanded situations since then.

Babcock, however, said his team can't afford to give the Coyotes as many power plays as it did the last game (six).

"We have to be more disciplined," Babcock said.

Red Wings captain Nicklas Lidstrom said his club's immense playoff experience helps in key games such as Friday's, especially against a team that last qualified for the postseason in 2002.

The Red Wings are 3-7 in their past 10 road playoff games.

Still, there is a certain comfort level Detroit's Todd Bertuzzi feels in hostile environments.

"I'd rather play on the road," Bertuzzi said. "Just the environment, you don't have to be pretty, you just have to get the job done."

If he plays he will be playing injured. IMO he'll be ineffective in the game he plays.

I'd rather Doan play at half efficiency so we can pound him more and ensure he's a non factor game 6.

I really wonder if they rest Doan again tonight and break him out if they face elimination in Game 6. They win tonight without him, I don't think we see him until Game 7, if ever. I have to believe he wrecked his shoulder and considering how much he throws his body around, that's the worst injury to have for him. He's a gamer and a bad ass but he'd be highly ineffective if he played hurt.

Big key...Howie carry the momentum and good vibes from Game 4 into enemy territory. An early goal against would be interesting to see how he reacts. I hope we don't have to see that but I'd like to see where his head will be at if they Yotes strike first and if he'll hang tough. If Game 4 was his breakthrough game, then I don't think we have anything to worry about if the rest of the guys play a solid road game and grind out a close win and take it home for Sunday and a possible deciding game.

Howard will be the key to shuting that crowd up and keep them in their place. The offense needs to come from our other lines for once, it wouldnt hurt. Its hard to go far in the playoffs with only 2 lines producing offensively. Keep it simple, play their game and stay out of the box.

I am nervous about this... Phoenix is going to be amped. Hopefully they don't know how to properly channel the energy and play sloppy defense.

Even if Doan doesn't play, they've got some solid leadership on defense with the likes of Jovo and Aucoin. I was there on there Tuesday and could see the frustration from them when the game slipped away. Sticks were being smashed and Bryzgalov kicked at one of the several octopi that hit the ice during the third period. If this was a young team, I think they'd be in trouble but they've got a decent blend of youth and experience.

They've got a great coach behind the bench and the good leadership as I mentioned...this is a sink or swim game if they want take back control. A close loss won't crush them but if Howard comes up big and the Wings beat them by a few goals, I think the blood will definitely be in the water. I seriously think the pressure is on the Coyotes to win tonight because the Joe will be a hornets' nest if they have stave off elimination on Sunday.

Enough of this back and forth of winning and losing games. Detroit needs to carry the momentum of last game where they played the best I have seen in a while and gain the upper hand. I'm fed up coming from behind and if Detroit only play well if they are behind, then it's silly. All the lines need to step up and out-hit, out-shoot and out-score Phoenix. Don't let the Phoenix top line play their game (Raffy and Lids will have to really work hard tonight).

Looking forward to an exciting game, I might actually watch it since it's a Friday and these kind of games are great.

Let's go Red Wings!

Going to be a great game. I think the Wings will take it 4-2.

Holy crap, Jimmy Howard's save percentage is awful! 0.14?!?

I hate 2 day breaks in the playoffs. Feels like 2 weeks.

Huge game, nervous as hell, but can't wait. These Coyotes just won't go away.

It's my parent's anniversary today- I want a win for them so Momma Bear will be nicer

She's been a tad grumpy today, although it's justified IMO... Dad is out of the state
