I'm interested to hear LEAF FANS opinions on Mikael Tellqvist. Is this a guy that can be groomed to be a starting goalie? Does he have the talent to do it? Wilbur thinks he is nothing but a back-up but he sounded like a guy with a grudge since his boy Kidd was definitely the worst goalie in the NHL this year.
I think that the back-up spot should go to a guy that this organization thinks can one day be the starting goaltender. Anyways give me your opinions on Tellqvist & your thoughts if he can be the future number 1 netminder.
Mikael Tellqvist should be ready to be Belfour's backup for next season (if there is a next season) but seeing how Quinn's job is safe for yet another season I really doubt he will get a fair shake with the Big Club..........It's no secret that Quinn prefers the vets over the young guys........If I was in charge of that Circus down at Air Canada Centre I would have fired Pat Quinn's big fat A$$ a long time ago..........Matt Stajan was one of the top rookies of the season and Quinn didn't even use him in the playoffs...that's one of many examples right there.
Compare that to some of the other goaltending prospects in the AHL. All of them played on better teams than Tellqvist did.
Lehtonen- .926 (Considered a future Vezina winner)
Miller- .925 (One of the highest ranked prosects in the league)
Emery- .922 (He might already be better than Lalime and Prusek)
Toivonen- .921 (Some people like him better than Raycroft)
Auld- .915 (Performed pretty well in the playoffs)
I'm not saying that this proves Tellqvist is going to be a great goalie.
But considering the team St. John's had this year, I don't think it's fair to judge Tellqvist until we see him in some more games at the NHL level.
And considering he's only lost 4 of his first 14 NHL games, I think he definitely deserves a chance with the big team.
