Random Question about Futures

Looking over our past trades History of Flyers Trades

Some awesome; some brutal. Sharp trade and Justin Williams comes to mind..

But one struck me odd.. When we traded JR to LA for Futures.. what did we get in return? I don't see anything that says we received compensation...

So what are futures? I figured they are future compensation for a trade.

The Flyers are getting Doughty as compensation.

And I loved the Williams trade. The guy is as soft as they come.

The trade of Roenick was completed in order to receive needed salary cap space for separate, but related roster adjustments.

So basically when it says Futures, it just means "Thanks for taking the salary/player off of our hands"?

In this instance, yes. There could have been an agreement predicated on achievements such as games played which JR may have failed to meet (he played one season for LA).

But as mentioned above, the move was made to clear space in order to fit other moves (such as Forsberg).

In the past, futures could be anything from playing a pre-season game in a certain building to draft picks.

From my understanding Futures is just Future Considerations which may have strings attached and may not. I.E the Pronger trade has futures that change if we win the cup.

It could be late picks or could be an option of years of the picks and so on. I've seen things like "Future Considerations of a 2011 5th round pick or 2012 5th round pick"

I think at the beginning of this year the team traded a prospect to Nashville (?) just to get him off the contract list for future considerations, but I don't believe we got anything back in return.

edit: Yeah, that list shows it was Patrick Hersley.

They got a second-round pick from the Kings for hiring Dean Lombardi but never received similar compensation (to my knowledge) for Roenick. It was strictly a deal for salary cap maneuverability.
