Overview
Extra InformationThe stars have delivered in the clutch for the Detroit Red Wings the past two games, scoring big goals in the third period to turn the series in their favor.

And the grinders have done a good job setting the tone early, working hard and being hard to play against.

Detroit’s third and fourth lines have had a significant impact in the Western Conference quarterfinals against Phoenix. Their energy will be vital Sunday afternoon in Game 6 at Joe Louis Arena.

The Red Wings, leading the series 3-2, feel an urgency to take care of business at home and avoid a potential pitfall in Game 7 Tuesday in Phoenix. Having to make a third trip out West in a two-week span would be taxing.

“We dropped the ball last time we went home (a 4-2 loss in Game 3). It’s very important how we handle this and respond,’’ Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said. “You don’t want to give them any life whatsoever. They got a good team and good goaltending. We’d hate to tempt fate and have to come back (to Phoenix) and win three games on the road.’’

Babcock changed the routine Saturday, holding a short practice at a local rink (the Joe was unavailable) so players could get their legs moving, since there is no morning skate Sunday due to the 2 p.m. start.

Getting started on time is especially important in the first game back from a Western trip. The Red Wings, who’ve gotten excellent goaltending from Jimmy Howard the last two games (one goal against), will continue to rely on their role players for speed, physicality, strong defensive play and solid penalty-killing.

Babcock said the bottom six (the Kris Draper-Darren Helm-Patrick Eaves line and the Drew Miller-Justin Abdelkader-Dan Cleary line) were better than the top six through two periods in Friday’s 4-1 Game 5 victory.

“Sometimes when you’re a skilled guy and you’re in a series like this, where there’s no room, you get hard-headed about getting through the neutral zone,’’ Babcock said. “The guys that are working for a living, they don’t do that. They know they got to flip it in, that’s why they’re having more success.

“The way Phoenix is playing and the way we’re playing, if you turn the puck over in the neutral zone all you do is back-check or play D-zone coverage. That’s what’s happening to some of our skill people.’’

Fortunately, the third and fourth lines have given the team what it needs -- sometimes a little more, as Miller scored his club’s first goal on Friday.

“Coach is putting some confidence in us and playing us some more minutes, some more key times,’’ Miller said. “We got to do our part to take some pressure off (the top lines), get some goals, kill penalties and give them a chance to go out there and do what they do best.’’

Helm said their goal is to spend more time in the Phoenix zone than the Coyotes are spending in the offensive zone.

“We’re getting pucks deep, not really giving up too much defensively,’’ Helm said.

Helm, Eaves and Miller are key components to the penalty-killing units that have prevented the Coyotes from scoring on their last 19 power plays dating back to the third period of Game 1.

“They came out, they were physical, they got after it,’’ Babcock said. “Abby’s a big body who can skate, so he punishes people. Helm plays with elite speed. They’re all going to be real good penalty-killers. Miller’s good without the puck, skates real well. So they got dimensions that can help you.’’

If the Red Wings win this series, they likely will be doing a lot more traveling in the playoffs, with potentially several more West Coast trips. It will be vital to get as much rest as possible between rounds. They realize they must be prepared to play Sunday.

“If we can do it at home it’s going to be a huge plus,’’ Helm said. “Travel’s tough, three-hour time change, five hours on the flight each way. It wears on a lot of guys. Going back home, in front of our fans, there should be a lot of energy in the rink and in our dressing room."

This game hinges on desire and a killer instinct. If we can bring it, we should close the series. Last change is also important to get our guys a couple more chances... let's hope we bury them.

Well, the stats section says "Ilja", but I have a feeling that isn't it....

Yeah, I'm supposed to be studying right now. Instead, I'm singing in Russian at the top of my lungs pissing my family off. It's fun

I think Phoenix G/G and GA/G are backwards, or is that part of your game?

God, I wish I were in Detroit today.......damn you governments and your new passport rules, and prices.

GO WINGS GO!!! I hope Datsyuk, Filppula, and Kronwall put up some points I have them in the pool and I need to win it to get some extra cashflow!!

Good catch Marky9er... I think it is backwards...

I'd get more pumped if I wasn't sitting here practicing the genitive case of singular nouns and adjectives in Russian.

Well, Flyers, Pens, Sharks have clinched, now it's our turn. Phoenix are going to play with a lot of intensity and will try to regain a grip on this series. The Wings will have to show that same patience and wait for the right moments to attack. I really hope we can put this series to bed today, the players need the rest and traveling to Phoenix again should not be an option. This should be the last game of the series in their minds.

btw, why the **** do the Wings always have to play in the afternoon for NBC? We never do well with these kind of games and I hope they break that habit. Anyways, I want a comprehensive win from the Wings today.

Let's go Red Wings!

“They’re the best team in the league for a reason,” Fiddler said. “They get a lot of respect from a lot of people, and the refs are especially one of them. We got to work for everything we get, and we’ve done it all year. No one has thrown us a bone all year and we don’t expect it now.”

LOL...of all the guys to be complaining about any kind of officiating issue..Fiddler is possibly the most undisciplined player I've ever seen play in the NHL....and I remember Shawn Cronin so that's saying something...

By the by, am I the only one that is a little tired of hearing Phoenix play the "no one wants us to win, we're the underdogs, boo hoo for us" stuff? If you say it once, that's enough to get your point across, but it seems like every guy that anyone talks to from Phoenix, they have to make the same point over and over and try to turn everything into Coyotes vs. the world...

Good catch Marky9er... I think it is backwards...

I'd get more pumped if I wasn't sitting here practicing the genitive case of singular nouns and adjectives in Russian.
Thanks, I work in the print industry....it's my job to make 'good catches'....if I have more good catches than 'excess cost reports'....i get bonus....right now I'm trailing 2-1....wish this one counted.

What an asshat. He should have gotten suspended for his headshot on Raffy last game - he's lucky he's even allowed to play. He's played absolutely dirty and stupid and him and Doan's idiotic penalty are the reason they are losing the series at this point. Perhaps he should play more disciplined and play hockey - rather than running around attempting to injure people and he wouldn't be complaining about the officiating.

Anyway, Let's Go Red Wings!
