ESPN: Torts sends message to Sather

From ESPN Insider's NHL Rumors portion which discusses Sather.

Basically the Toronto Sun reporting that Sather will be back as GM next year with Messier perhaps being more involved in the transactions process.

But this little tidbit at the end was a sign of hope?

"Also of note: Coach John Tortorella sent Sather a message after the season was over that basically asked him to not deal his young core, and not sign any highly paid veterans; in short, don't screw up the future with another bad contract."

Yay Torts. Now the next thing you need to do is find a roll of duct tape. Find Sather sitting in his chair. You know the rest.

+1 for Torts.

However, I am not convinced Sather will listen.

Isn't this just stating what Torts said right after the season ended? Keep the young core together etc?

Torts is wisening up. If Redden is gone this summer I'll give him the credit.

torts sending a message to slats. great. are they on different planets or something ?

they cant just speak face to face or on the phone.

keep the young core sounds great, and signing no free agents that suck sounds good too, but sitting through another season of not scoring goals will be brutal.

im wondering who torts is expecting to score goals next year ?

staying the course sounds smart, but losing games and missing the playoffs because we didnt upgrade our below average team while the other teams in our division got better ....

is stupidness.

Torts said no big contracts. The rangers could still get scoring by signing people who won't be taking huge contracts.

That is completely baseless. The reporters and writers dont know and have no idea if they have conversed personally about it, which I am sure they have.

They are pointing out that in Tort's statement to the media, it was inferred that he didnt want Slats to go a certain route.

Talk about spin.

They can still do a little cosmetic makeover but nothing extreme. The name of the game this summer is VALUE;

They need to add a scorer or two, probably someone in the Stempniak/Demetria B-level short term range and probably one veteran 3rd pair DMan.

They can't do too much because after next season it's gonna turn into 1988-89 all over again as they're gonna have to make room for about 5-7 guys in the 50 contract limit; Werek, Hagelin, McD, Horak, Borque, and maybe even Stepan and let's not forget about Valetenko (who I hope comes over this year)/Pashnian and who knows what they come up with this draft.

A message like this:

Dear Glen,

Get me someone who can put the puck in the net.

Yours,

J. Tortorella

I don't get that at all. Kovalchuk is not a highly paid veteran. Hes a 27 year old.

Torts would probably love to have Kovy on the team..

I am sure Sather will contact Torts before signing any big free agent to the roster.

Yeah, you're right. It will go something like this:

*Ring Ring*

Torts: Hello?

Sather: Hey John. Just wanted to let you know we made that big signing you asked for.

Torts: What are you talking about? I told you I didn't want any big signings.

Sather: Sure, John. Whatever you say. Anyway, I gave Pavol Demitra the 3 year/18 million dollar deal he wanted. What a bargain! He'll go great on a line with Gomez and that Jessiman kid.

Torts: Glen are you ****ing insane? What the **** are you thinking you old piece of....

Sather: (Blowing into phone) What's that? I think we're breaking up, John (more blowing). I'll call you later. I have a meeting set up with Chelios' agent in 30 minutes. Bye!

So a coach that didn't make the playoffs and doesn't have a leg to stand on called out the G.M. who is the owners pet and tells him what to do? I call B.S. on this rumor. Why didn't the NY media have this? Don't sign big free agents?

Based on this logic were should ignore every insight you ever have that the "NY media" doesn't report.

It's really unbelievable how hypocritical you can be.

Seriously, guys, this is ESPN. My belief is they're basing this all purely on speculation from these statements by Torts:

Quote:
“There are still some things we need to fix,” Tortorella said. “We have a really good core. We have some problems outside of our young core with some of the players. I’m not the GM. We really need to be realistic as to what the Rangers are. Are we a No. 9 team, are we a No. 14 team, are we a top four team? We have to continue to grow that core.”

He said he didn’t think the Rangers needed as drastic an overhaul as last season, when they started the season with 10 new players on the roster.
http://blogs.northjersey.com/blogs/r...torellas_take/

Quite frankly, I think ESPN is really reaching with their "speculation."

Personally I think the Rangers lack of success this season has more to do with the roster Sather put together than the coaching job by Torts, but that's just my opinion. That's not to say I'm giving Torts an A for effort, because he clearly needs to do a better job next year too.

That being said, I'm glad Torts is prodding Sather to not go full-retard in July.

Rumor and speculation?

Torts is saying he wants Sather to keep the young core and not overpay veteran free agents, is that really such a reach?

Many posters here are advocating the same thing, but I guess because it's coming from Torts people are taking issue with it.

No need to take a shot at dagoon. He's not an official news outlet, like ESPN. I get the point he's trying to make.

What's the point that he's trying to make? Why does it matter if ESPN is an "official news outlet"? Why can't ESPN have info that the "NY media" doesn't have, yet Dagoon is more than capable?

It makes zero sense to denounce a report on the basis of it "not being reported by the NY media" when you have established yourself as being a person who "reports things that the NY media doesn't have."

Translation:

Torts stated the obvious, which was nothing of importance, to someone who is close to brain dead in terms of hockey acumen.

And some fans find hope in this non-story. That's how desperate this fanbase is.
