Pens Draft day proposal

As we all know, Draft Day is June 26th. The CBA expires on July 1st.

I don't forsee anykind of major draft day deals taking place.

However, in light of certain changes that might happen, should the Penguins, one of the lowest teams in terms of finance, risk their first rounder for high end players?

Highly unlikely, but not out of the question. There are a lot of teams that are going to need a strong farm system in the years to come if the new CBA favors some type of NFL-type CBA.

If a modest cap is implimented, the Penguins and a handful of other teams will have an enormous amount of room to play around with.

Not just the Pens, but do you think any of the bottom 5 teams would be willing to part with their pick for more depth on their current rosters?

The Pens have enough depth on the farm. What they desparately need is a young blue chip offensive player. If they get offered that in a trade, they might move the pick. Otherwise, they'll probably stand pat and just draft Malkin.

I wouldn't mind offering Columbus or Chicago this deal:

A goalie Prospect (Brandon Crawford-West, Tomas Duba or Dwight Labrosse)
(2) 2nd round picks

for a chance at:

Defencemen Cam Barker

The current CBA does not expire on July 1st. The CBA expires in September, following the completion of the World Cup of Hockey tournament. This is important for such summer milestones as qualification of Group II RFA salaries, draft day, the beginning of free agency, and the arbitration process running from July through August. Sergei Gonchar, for example, has arbitration rights this summer, just prior to the expiration of the current CBA.

The CBA ends just as teams typically begin their training camps. Management must act under the current CBA this summer, though many will be anticipating changes ahead and acting accordingly.

The cba expires either September 13 or Sep 15. ...not sure..but it's not in any other month. That said, you could see some UFA sign ...highly unlikely but still possible.

With the way both are developing, I would not give up either straight up for Barker. Welch played a solid season at Harvard, and Whitney led BU in scoring as a D-man...not to mention playing incredible in the AHL playoffs right now.

Afinogenov and McKee and 13 for number 2 is what I would offer.

How does Kotalik and McKee come even close to the value or importance of our future in Vanek?

It should be noted that a salary cap will not give Pittsburg a lot (read: any) room this year, next year, or until they start making money. If the cap is $40 million and Pittsburg can only afford to spend $30 million, it simply does not help them. All it can do is drive down the average league salaries, though sought after players will still get the green from teams that have just enough wiggle room. Revenue sharing is what will really help Pittsburg.

While I agree that the trade involving one of the Pens goalie prospects + 2 2nd rounders is ridiculous, I think the equal value in your proposal is almost as far off. Whitney was drafted 5th over all and has a good chance at being as good as Barker. If not AS good then certainly near as good. The difference in the two will NOT be 2 2nd rounders. Possibly a later round pick but TWO 2nd's?
C'mon. Same goes for Noah, btw.

That wouldn't cut it.

Evgeny Malkin would easily be Buffalo's best prospect... EASILY.

If I was Pittsburgh, I wouldn't even move the #2 for Vanek and #13... it would be tempting, but consider Malkin's upside and it's higher then Vaneks.

Cant agree more. I'll say it right now that you will not see Pittsburgh or Washington deal the #1 or #2 picks to any team.

Easily? He would be better then Vanek but Vanek is a top 5 or top 10 prospect.Malkin isn't as good as AO either.

Vanek plus a player like Wolski,Green,O'Neill,Chipchura etc is easily worth more then Malkin.

I would have no desire to move up because it's a waste, unless you are moving up late in the 1st or moving up 2 or 3 spots.

The deal would be

BUF: Thomas Vanek, 13th overall 2004, BUF 1st in 05

for

PIT: Evgenii Malkin, Brooks Orpik.

I think its fair, but I would rather have Oprik and Malkin.

I still think the pens give up alot. Orpik's value skyrocketed this year. He is 24 and has already shown to be a Top 4 dman. Young, top 4 dmen in this league are a premium.IMO

Even though I like Vanek, I think Malkin is going to be alot better than him. I guess you would have to see the other player taken to really get a good idea. However, I think Orpik is pretty much untouchable for the pens. Not that they wouldnt trade him if given and great deal, but it would prob have to be and overpayment. Malkin is going to be a great pick and thats why they will stay at #2 and take him.

It an interesting proposal. One I would ultimately turn down and keep Malkin and Orpik.
