Overview
Extra InformationRed Wings say quick turnaround is a positive heading into series with Sharks

Rather than complain about getting shafted by the schedule maker, the Detroit Red Wings were eager to start the next round of the playoffs.

The feeling is that momentum compensates for short rest, so playing San Jose on Thursday, just two days after finishing off Phoenix in a tough, seven-game series, was not a concern.

"I like the quick turnaround. Let's get at it right away,'' forward Todd Bertuzzi said. "Obviously, they're a tough opponent. We've had some really good games against them. It's going to be another tough task.''

The NHL was forced to start the series Thursday because HP Pavilion is hosting concerts by the Eagles on Friday and Saturday.

Asked about the challenge of making a quick turnaround, Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said, "It's way better than the challenge of not playing.''

He also noted that having two days off before Game 2 on Sunday will help his team re-energize.

The Sharks will have had three days off after eliminating Colorado on Sunday.

"They're well-rested,'' Red Wings general manager Ken Holland said. "Hopefully, the emotion of Game 7 carries over for us.''

Another day or two off would have been more important if the Red Wings had any injuries.

"Against Pittsburgh last year (in the Stanley Cup finals), we weren't that healthy (going in), we could have used a few extra days,'' Dan Cleary said. "It's the playoffs, we're going to be ready, we got momentum.

"(Tuesday) wasn't a hard game. For a period and a half, it was hard. The rest of it was pretty easy for a playoff game.''

That enabled Babcock to trim the minutes of some top players in the third period.

"It helped late in the game not to be forced to protect the lead and play your top players,'' Lidstrom said. "They had a chance to rest. That's good when you're moving on.''

Habs fan here. I have the utmost respect for the Wings club. Rooted for you guys last two years in the finals, and I'll be watching and cheering for you this series. Should be a good one. Best of luck!

Not sure what to expect from this game. I have to say I'm a bit worried. That said, I'm going to be optimistic and say wings will win the game 4-3 with Franzen waking up with 2 goals and the game winner.

I aint worried. Detroit will come out flying and SJ will prove to be slow and very unspectacular.

Part of me isn't ready for the next series to start but I like it from a Wings' perspective...the less of a layoff, the better. Just like in the Phoenix series, I'd love to at least see a split in San Jose. The Wings won both games in HP Pavilion during the regular season and won three out of four road games in the last series...no reason to worry about home ice DISadvantage against the Sharks.

For the Sharks, I see Pavelski being a bigger concern than Thornton. I wonder who Babs decides to matchup against whom. I'd go with Hank against Thornton/Heatley and Pavel against Pavelski's line.

Thanks for the GDT TG!

I'm just going to post what a posted on the main forum...(with a little bit more of homer)

Well, I can't believe Round 2 is starting already (thanks Gary...), Detroit will probably be exhausted since they played 2 days ago, so I think Sharks might take this one.

Wings will have to rely on an airtight defense against a team known for its' offensive power. If we can counter that and get our forwards going, we might have a chance. I predict the Wings will come out guns blazing but will turn off in the second due to fatigue (which happens most of the time).

Red Wings vs. Sharks is always a great game, so I expect a really exciting series. Can't wait!

And no NBC afternoon games!!! We might actually win at home for once!!

Let's go Red Wings!

agreed

3-1 wings final and it will be one of those games where SJ was lucky it wasn't 5-1/6-1

He matched up Z with Hanzal's line (PHX's most dangerous line IMO) last series, so I think he'll start against Thornton's line. Dats' line is good enough to face the second line. btw, I think Marleau is playing with Thornton according to both GDT's. lmao, Heatley on the third line.

btw shoalzie, did you get a chance to make an avatar with the picture I posted? let me know whenever its ready, thanks!

They are already adjusted to PST and I don't think the Phoenix series took too much out of them, everyone seemed to have plenty of energy in that game 7. I think the Wings can win this one if they just throw everything at Nabakov right off the bat and let Homer get inside his head.

Yeah I know, travel was not really the issue. If we had home ice, then it would be a bigger issue. but here it's just like the next state over. But having played 48 hours before and the Sharks had rest and time to train, they have the upper hand. But we know all too well that sometimes the team with less rest comes out on top. As long as we can keep the same intensity throughout the game, pepper Nabokov (no shots straight at him...I'm looking at you Kronwall and Eaves!) and get an early advantage, we might be able to close of the game by playing good defense and puck possession.

I am ready the Sharks had a easy road the first round as the tried to beat themself so the Sharks should be rested and ready. We need to win at least one on the road and hopefully the regular season sharks will show up

Not up to me, but I'd like to suggest throwing up this new hwbm http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TEO5KFcZV3Q

maybe in place of the Dallas Drake one (he wasn't around long enough to care about that much)? Or just tack it on as the 7th?

edit: actually I'd just replace the other Datsyuk one since it's only the Winter Classic...

I fear the same old script--DET geezers awaken-- outskate the slow Sharks and win easy in 5 games...
THEN DET rests while CHI slugs it out with VAN over 6 or 7 games..

THEN DET old geezers "School" young hawks AGAIN to win in another 5 games.

THEN DET old legs finally start tiring and CROSBY beats them again..

THis is a bad repetitive script for Bettman-but alas it probably plays out thar way ...

Wings played 7 games versus Anaheim before playing Chicago last season just in case you forgot, which was one of the most intense series last season.

The year before Chicago didn't even make the playoffs and every series went 6 games for Detroit.

The Wings injuries caught up to them, not "old legs."

Not really sure what "script" you are referring to, because in reality none of the events you suggested happened, actually happened.

Pens won by default in my book still. But winning is winning. All bets aside, this will be a good series IMHO.

for us

Heatley not likely to be on Thornton/Marleau. f.y.i.

But this entire series is mental for the Sharks. If they can match the Red Wings effort and determination, it should be a great series for one, but if that really happens the Sharks have the talent to get over on the Red Wings this year.

If the Sharks don't put the beatdown on players standing in front of Nabby, then of course the Wings take this series. But that commitment of the Sharks to put on that beat-down has nothing to do with talent...there's the divide between the fan bases:

As Wings fans you guys know the team will bring the effort...Sharks fans are more curious to see if the team will bring it.

That said I'd feel better if Larionov were back on the Sharks for tonight.
