Philly fans

I've been having an ongoing argument with some friends about this.

http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/...illy_fans.html

The article is about baseball, but I think it applies to hockey too.

What do you think? Does the author or Shane Victorino have the right idea of what fans are supposed to do?

(I agree with the author, personally.)

Shut up and play the game. Earn your money and you won't be booed.

Players shouldn't get involved with the writers and cirticize the fans, so what they boo once in a while, it's usually the drunken, miserable morons who think they're supposed to win every game.

Players need to be above that and just worry about their performance and be a professional. Werth was WAY out of line the other nite cursing a father while his son was sitting right there next to him.

Unrightfully so, fans expect perfection every game.....ain't gonna happen, so players have to tune out the some of the malcontents.....if I was making what they guys make I could tune them out easyily.

I think alot of it has to do with a rotating crowd on a nightly basis at the Phils games, and definitely the Flyers games. The days of the same season ticket holders going to every game are long gone because of pricing. And what you get is a fan who's dropping $200+ for maybe the only night they'll see a game live that season, and if they suck that night, well he's gonna boo louder than if he were there every night. I'm not a boo-er, but I understand the idea behind it.

fans are just consumers paying for a product. If the fans do not feel they are getting what they pay for, they complain. It is how things are...

I don't agree with either, really. The author trying to downplay the importance of supportive fans is stupid. Look, obviously fans don't directly affect the game and aren't responsible for slumps, but I'm sure a player doesn't feel good being booed. I also dislike Victorino playing the "did you forget the last two years" card and referencing the "front-runner" incident. The fans didn't forget the last few years, but that's not what they're paying to see. They have high expectations, as do you, and I really don't want to see the players dwelling on their past successes, either.

I hate when players complain about the fans. You literally can do nothing worse.

You make money because of US. Shut the **** up and play.

Neither Jimmy nor Shane get this. Pat Burrell, ironically, did.

We boo because we care. We really, really care and it is nothing like front-running at all. It is the same well of passion that results in us giving a standing ovation mid-at bat to Myers for fouling off pitches because he was upping CC's pitch count. That moment simply doesn't happen somewhere more 'supportive' in the midwest.

Front-runners don't boo. They don't care enough to do so.

It was very nice, but as good as Wood was I still saw a lot of frustrated ABs. We can't have quiet bats for so long and hope to win every day. That said, I have a feeling Hamels will break his day-game curse and have a good start today.

Most of the players on the Phils team seem pretty damn soft, IMO. Except for Chase and Halladay, those guys have the mental toughness to take the noise from angry fans and spin it into motivation. These other ******* need to just shut up and play.

In all my years of going to Phils/Eagles/Flyers games I have never seen a player/team get booed when they put forth maximum effort. Being outmatched by an opponent sucks, but if the athletes give the effort most fans say, "Ah.... Well get'em next year. Good season boys."

Plus, in Philly the fans could be booing the coach, the team, the ref, the call, the spot of the ball, opposing players/coaches, other fans, etc.... . Its tough for a player to tell whats going on.

I do love what one poster said about Myers fouling off pitches, and that should prove to the players that Philly fans are extremely passionate.

"That's the thing that frustrates me more than anything, listening to that kind of stuff," Victorino told MLB.com. "They're quick to forget what we've done the last two years. When I hear things like that, it eats me. OK. I see. Jimmy [Rollins] used that word. I'm not going to use it, but you know what I'm talking about."
In July, you're also supposed to forget what you did the last 2 years and worry about the next 3 months.

Exactly how I felt about the trial on the isle thread and the dude with his pic with Carter and Carter's huge frown...we pay your salary, the least you can do is flex those muscles in your checks and give the guy a smile, you miserable arrogant ****. Most superstars are ****** though, barring a few exceptions (Roenick, heard good about Briere).

This Carter hate has gotten old.

He didn't even have to be on the trial on the isle.

4 game sweep of the Reds going into the All-Star break is huge. Especially riding a streak of 21 shutout innings. Hitting just has to pick up.

That was the best game I've been to all year.

I'm excited for the second half. I hope the starters begin to get more wins.

Loved how Cole managed to battle through the terrible balls and strikes calls and get himself a dirty win. Good boy!
