I can't see Lemieux playing third line... if he plays i'd think he'd be 1'st or second...

Great team. I might switch Lemieux with Nash but aside from that I like the roster.

Team Canada 2004 Roster, I think

Heres what I like:

Goal:

Brodeur is #1, and pretty sure Luongo is #2. #3 could be a veteran, like Belfour or Burke, but more likely either Therdore or Turco. Long shot: Giguere

Defense:

Pronger, Blake and Neidermayer are locks

Redden should be a lock as well, and McCabe has earned a spot. Need a more defensive presence with the final 2 picks, so we will look at Adam Foote and Robyn Regehr. Long Shot: Richard Matvichuk or Jay Bouwmeester

Center:

If healthy, Lemieux and Joe Thornton should be locks as #1 and #2 Center. Yzerman would have went if healthy, but not likely. Give me Joe Sakic on Third scoring line (there will be 3 scoring lines, and 1 checking line), and Kris Draper on the checking line. It will be too bad, but if there was room, Daniel Briere would thrive at this type of Tournament. Just look at what he did at the worlds.
Long shot: shawn Horcoff

Wingers:

Iginla and Heatley with Thornton, Shanahan and St. Louis with Lemieux, Tanguay and Paul Kariya with Sakic. Kris Draper on the checking line with Gary Roberts and Ryan Smyth

Spares: Rick Nash, Shane Doan, Jeff Freisen, Michael Peca

One key point: We have assumed that Bertuzzi will be declared ineligible for this Tournament. IF he is, then kiss Roberts goodbye, put him with Heatley and Thornton, and put Iginla with Shanahan and Lemieux. St. Louis moves to the checking line, and penalty killing specialist.

I would go with a similar team this would be my lineup:
Forwards. .........Defense. .................Goal
Joe Thorton ......Chris Pronger ...........Martin Brodour
Joe Sakic ......... Rob Blake ...............Ed Belfour
Mario Lemieux ... Ed Jovanovski .........Roberto Luongo
Alex Tanguay ... Scott Niedermayer
Brad Richards ... Adam Foot
Cory Stillman ... Bryan McCabe
Paul Kariya ...... Adrian Aucoin
Rick Nash
Martin Stlouis
Jarome Iginla
Todd Bertuzzi
Danny Heatly
Ryan Smyth

That is a pretty solid lineup the line combos would be like such.
Left Wing................ Center..................Right Wing.
1.Paul Kariya ...........Joe Sakic ..............Martin St louis
2.Rick Nash .............Mario Lemieux ........Todd Bertuzzi
3.Alex Tanguay ........Joe Thorton ...........Jarome Iginla
4.Cory Stillman ........Brad Richards ..........Dany Heatly
(extra)Ryan Smith.

Defense.
1.Chris Pronger - Scott Niedermayer
2.Rob Blake - Ed Jovanovski
3.Adam Foot - Bryan McCabe

Goal.
1.Martin Brodour
2.Ed Belfour
(Extra)Roberto Luongo

1st line : The first line of Kariya,Sakic, St-louis is a line I would put together because of the offence they could generate with their speed and puck moving ability. IMO that line would give any country fits.
2nd line : A big line that has loads of offensive weapons with the likes of Nash, Lemieux, and Bertuzzi it could mean a long night for the opposing goalies. This line could generate lots of offense with it's size to offset the lack of size the 1st line gives up.
3rd. The 3rd line of Tanguay, Thorton, and Iginla would be more of your power line.
Two guys who love to crash and bang and go to the net in Thorton and Iginla and a guy who has great vision and overall offensive ability in Tanguay would give a nice balance for the 3rd line.
4th. Stillman, Richards and Heatly would round out the 4th line. This line rounds out an already potent offensive with Heatly and Stillman flying on the wings and the play making ability of Richards this line could put up some decent numbers.

Then we have the defense.
1. Pronger and Niedermayer - a balance of power and Finess these two guys would bring speed offense and a stable defensive game to Canada's 1st unit.
2. Blake and Jovanovski - Two rough and tough defenseman who love to hit. These two guys also play a sound defensive game and are among the leagues best offensive defensemen.
3.Foot and McCabe - These two guys round out the top 6 defenseman on the team with a mixture or offense and defense both defenseman are reliable defenseman who are foundations to their NHL teams defense. Foot is a superb defensive defenseman who can chip in offensively where McCabe has turnt into one of the games top two way defenseman who possesses a cannon of a shot.

Goal
No other team even comes close to the depth Canada posses in nets.. With
Brodour, Belfour, and Luongo Canada's only dilemma will be deciding who starts..

BuppY..........

I would have to agree with pretty much most of your picks except for these:

1) In Net replace Theodore with Belfour and since Pat Quinn will be head coach of Team Canada once again you can bet the mortgage (If you have one) that Eddie will be there..........

2) Wade Redden has got to be the most over-rated blueliner that's currently playing in the NHL........I would quickly replace him with Ed Jovonovski of ther Nucks.......Eric Brewer would be my #7 blueliner

3) Paul Kariya had an awful season and replace him with Simon Gagne of the Flyers........My top line would be Joe Sakic at Centre with Iginla and Gagne on the wings.............

Other than that I would have to agree with the rest of your selections.

Cheers!~

I'd like to think Ohlund gets the award of most overrated McCabe a close second.
I think Redden has deserved his spot and correct me if I'm wrong but Gretzky has said he's a lock in the past. #6 I would say is a tossup between McCabe/Aucoin/Brewer. I'd take Aucoin or Brewer personally.

The NHL has no power over weither or not Bertuzzi can play in this torney do they? I mean other then the fact of the people who are picking the teams but what I mean is, is he restricted from playing.

From Bob mackenzie

As for Bertuzzi, he can be named to the roster now and if the NHL doesn't re-instate him in August, Team Canada would be permitted to add a replacement.

Canada's WC team announcement on Saturday

Canada's WC team announcement on Saturday

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/news_story.asp...05&hubName=nhl

The hot potato for Gretzky and Hockey Canada president Bob Nicholson will be whether or not to name suspended NHL star Todd Bertuzzi. Should Team Canada select the Vancouver Canucks winger, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman will hold a hearing with Bertuzzi to determine whether or not to re-instate him following his sucker-punch incident with Steve Moore in March.

The World Cup of Hockey is a joint venture between the NHL and NHL Players' Association, which is why Bertuzzi would need Bettman's blessing.

This much is certain, the roster unveiled by Gretzky on Saturday will include a number of new faces from the squad that captured Olympic gold in Salt Lake City in February 2002.

Forwards Dany Heatley, Martin St. Louis and Joe Thornton are locks to join the Olympic champions, while the likes of Brad Richards, Vincent Lecavalier, Patrick Marleau, Alex Tanguay, Kris Draper, Keith Primeau, Shane Doan, Brenden Morrow, Brendan Morrison, Rob Niedermayer, Glen Murray and Rick Nash were all on the shortlist the Canadian team management needed to pare down Friday night.

"It would be a great honour to be named," Marleau said Friday in Calgary, where his San Jose Sharks prepared for Sunday's Game 4 of the Western Conference final. "It's tough right now to think about that but it definitely would be an honour."

Definitely gone from the Salt Lake team are forwards Theo Fleury and Eric Lindros while it appeared doubtful that aging stars Steve Yzerman, Joe Nieuwendyk, Owen Nolan and Brendan Shanahan would be brought back.

Michael Peca may have lost his checking role to either Primeau or Draper while Simon Gagne hasn't done enough to keep his job.

Joe Sakic and Jarome Iginla were sure to be brought back, while Paul Kariya and Ryan Smyth were on the bubble. Mario Lemieux is expected to be named Saturday. He can be replaced later this summer if the 38-year-old superstar feels he's not up to it after recovering from season-ending hip surgery.

Much less change was expected on the blue-line, where six of Canada's seven defencemen from Salt Lake may be back: Adam Foote, Ed Jovanovski, Rob Blake, Scott Niedermayer, Chris Pronger and Eric Brewer. Only 40-year-old Al MacInnis, his career in jeopardy because of a serious eye injury, will definitely not be back.

Because Canada will likely carry eight defencemen, that means two newcomers to the squad. Wade Redden, Robyn Regehr, Bryan McCabe, Sheldon Souray, Brad Stuart, Scott Hannan, Chris Phillips and Jay Bouwmeester were on the shortlist for those two spots.

Regehr has built up his case with Calgary's surprising run to the Western conference final.

"He's been so good for our team," his teammate Iginla said Friday in Calgary. "You can see his confidence growing. He's got the hardest shot on our team, he skates well and he's hard to play against. He'd be a great pick."

In goal, Martin Brodeur will return as the No. 1 man. The two backup jobs were to be decided between Ed Belfour, Jose Theodore and Roberto Luongo. Belfour, 39, was the No. 3 netminder in Salt Lake City behind Brodeur and Curtis Joseph.

What if Canada iced a second team?

Ever wonder what it would be like if Canada was allowed to ice a second team at the World Cup of Hockey?

"There's so much talent in Canadian hockey," Team Canada boss Wayne Gretzky said Saturday. "We should be proud of the talent we're producing because we could have two very good hockey clubs."

Bouwmeester should be on the team ahead of McCabe, but who cares. Lets get a team Canada 2 in the competition already.

No wonder your nick name starts with confused if you think Jay-Bo deserves to be on the roster ahead of McCabe. Players who are on team Canada who IMO should & should not be there:

C:Mario Lemieux ---------- Deserves to be on the team.
C:Steve Yzerman --------- Deserves to be on the team.
G:Martin Brodeur ---------- Deserves to be on the team.
G:Ed Belfour -------------- Deserves to be on the team.
D:Rob Blake -------------- Deserves to be on the team.
D:Adam Foote ------------ Deserves to be on the team.
D:Scott Niedermayer ------ Deserves to be on the team.
D:Chris Pronger ----------- Deserves to be on the team.
D:Ed Jovanovski ---------- Deserves to be on the team.
D:Eric Brewer ------------ Does not deserve to be on the team.
C:Joe Sakic -------------- Deserves to be on the team.
RW:Jarome Iginla ---------- Deserves to be on the team.
LW:Ryan Smyth ----------- Deserves to be on the team.
LW:Simon Gagne ---------- Does not deserve to be on the team.
G:Roberto Luongo ------- Deserves to be on the team.
D:Robyn Regehr --------- Does not deserve to be on the team.
D:Wade Redden --------- Deserves to be on the team.
RWany Heatley --------- Deserves to be on the team.
C:Joe Thornton --------- Deserves to be on the team.
RW:Martin St. Louis ------ Deserves to be on the team.
Catrick Marleau ------ Deserves to be on the team.
LW:Brenden Morrow ----- Does not deserve to be on the team.
C:Brad Richards -------- Deserves to be on the team.
C:Kris Draper ----------- Does not deserve to be on the team.
RW:Kirk Maltby ----------- Does not deserve to be on the team.
RW:Shane Doan ---------- Does not deserve to be on the team.

The should not's ____________The shoulds.
1:Eric Brewer ______________1:Bryan McCabe
2:Simon Gagne_____________2:Alex Tanguay
3:Robyn Regehr ___________3:Adrian Aucoin
4:Brenden Morrow _________4:Cory Stillman
5:Kris Draper ______________5:Rick Nash
6:Kirk Maltby ______________6aul Kariya
7:Shane Doan _____________7:Todd Bertuzzi
I guess it's debatable there are going to be players people think should be on the roster and players people feel should be left off the roster. Personally I feel this Canadian team could be better but ah well there will be chances between now and then depending how the rest of the playoffs unfold. Right now I see the lines as such.
Centers:::::::::::LW::::::::::::::::::RW:::::::::: :::::::::::::::::::::::::::G::::::::
Mario Lemieux....Ryan Smyth .........Shane Done.......Rob Blake........Roberto Luongo

-------------------Forwards--------------------
1st: Patrick Marleau - Joe Sakic - Martin St. louis

3rd: Wade Redden - Adam Foot
Extras: Eric Brewer, Robyn Regehr.
--------------------Goalie----------------------
Starter: Martin Brodour
backup: Ed Belfour
3rd tier: Roberto Luongo

This is a pretty solid team that could quite easily bring us home the gold. I don't think it is the best team we could Ice but it is easily imo the best team in the tourney.
