Paul Ranger

Is it time for another "wtf happened to this guy" thread? Too early?

It's amazing all this time has passed with no word I've seen anywhere as to what actually happened to him. He seemed like such a solid player, and a great asset for the Bolts... and then poof.

No one knows, no one will talk about it. Last we heard he was seen at the Times Forum after the season was over. So he's alive at least.

Management have kept quiet, not even his teammates know what the issue is.

I mean he was struggling a bit this season, had had surgery on his shoulder and so hadnt been able to work out as much (he was known for always being in great shape) and so looked a bit undersized. But that was the only thing anyone really noticed.

RANGER SIGHTING: Lightning coach Rick Tocchet acknowledged that D Paul Ranger, away from the team since Oct. 23 because of a personal issue, visited the locker room Tuesday.

"I talked to him briefly," Tocchet said. "It was a quick, 'Hi, how you doing?' "

Tocchet said Ranger, who apparently requested he not be paid during his absence, was picking up tax information.

"I didn't get any insight," Tocchet said. "I just asked how he was."

Its amazing how silent this situation has been compared to all the **** that Barrie enjoyed leaking through his short ownership tenure.

Hopefully Paul is okay. He was at the town hall and was very small, lost a lot of muscle mass. Was in good spirits, was enjoying himself though. Hes really a super guy, always nice to everyone.

Would love to have him back next year.

So much, always been a fan of his, plus a #2/3 dman always helps, especially with our blueline.

"Sick" small or "not working out" small?

Requested not to be paid during his absence? Has not spoken to the team, management, or even family?

Wow, this is bizarre.

A couple of April articles that offer scant information:
Quote:
Paul Ranger showed up at the St. Pete Times Forum for the second straight day on Wednesday.
...
And he looked fit and trim, as if he has been working out.

Captain Mike Anderson has been doing extremely well on these schools and landing trout to 29 inches with Lightning players Mike Smith and Paul Ranger.

Still in town, looking healthy, interacting with his teammates.

Such a strange situation, that he wouldn't even tell teammates. At least he's okay and everything though, hopefully he's worked/working out whatever the issues were, sounds like he has been.

Maybe just taking some time off of hockey. It's kind of like when Legein said he's done hockey, but now he's playing with the Adirondack Phantoms of the AHL. So some guys maybe just want some time away from the game. The odd part is that with Legein he announced to everyone on what his plans were, with Ranger it has been kept silent.

Somebody brought up that he may be addicted to pain pills but then another person on that site said that they heard from a teammate that he is definitely not.

Anyone want to chime in from that angle?

******** story from a local radio guy.

He looked small in the not working out sense. He has spoken with management about it, they've said they've discussed and cleared it with him and the NHL, but refuse to talk about it.

Ranger was one of my favourite young D-men, I was wondering what the hell happened to him.

Hadn't even realized he wasn't playing with the team...

perhaps he's having a 'The Razor's Edge' kind of year.

Not to resurrect a thread from the dead but...

Jay Feaster was just on NHL Live and the subject of Paul's whereabouts was discussed. Jay mentioned that what was keeping Paul away was a personal issue that was also out of his hands. I'm going to assume its depression? Anyway, he apparently will be meeting with Stevie Y to discuss if he can come back to Tampa this season.

Hm, news to me. Good, though. I'd love to have him back.

Hopefully whatever it is he sees it through successfully and comes back a better man for it.

If I were a betting man, i'd say that he's in recovery for substance abuse.

I agree, sounds to me like he's recovering from some kind of substance abuse. I guess he could have asked to not be paid because having all that money (Not sure what his salary is like, but im it'd be higher than the avg. person for sure) could tempt him into buying whatever it is he was addicted to?? But then again its all speculation and it could be something completely different... just my take on it.

Guys, watch the speculation about substance abuse. It could be a myriad of things -- family, health, financial...

Sometimes these guys just need to be left alone. I know I sure as **** feel like that sometimes.
