RIP Ernie Harwell

This might belong in the Michigan Sports Thread, but the news has just totally took me out of the game.

RIP Ernie.

definitely deserves his own thread.
one of the best broadcasters of all time, and a better man than he was a broadcaster, so that's saying something.
was only a matter of time, but it's still too soon. RIP, Ernie.

I'd say the passing of Ernie deserves his own thread.

Certainly was to be expected. Even if he was able to have surgery to correct cancer at his age. It was a matter of time before he would pass away.

But it still sucks nonethless

Grew up listening to Ernie on the radio. His voice was baseball to me. His voice was summer. My dad would have him on in the shop while he worked, or outside while he barbecued. RIP

He was an icon and an institution and though this isn't that surprising, it's nevertheless a big loss for the baseball community and the state of Michigan.

Come from a family of Tigers fans.

Harwell was a favorite of mine. Baseball lost a great ambassador today.

It's not a great picture, but I took this when Shoalzie and I took our mini vacation to Detroit last fall...

What a double whammy today.

This kinda feels like when Bo died and UM couldn't win the OSU game in 2006.

He will be missed.

I want to express my sincerest condolences on your loss Tigers fans. We in the Bay Area know what it's like when that great voice on the radio passes on, as our Bill King died just a couple of years ago. Additionally, my grandmother passed this time last year from bile-duct cancer. I can only hope that God took Ernie like when he took my grandmother, before she needed the pain meds.

RIP Ernie Harwell.

Ernie's passing really puts things into perceptive. He was a great broadcaster, but even a better man and in the end the latter really matters most. Many nights i fell asleep listening to Ernie and Paul on the radio, he almost like a grandpa to me. And if anyone was lucky enough to meet Ernie in real life, he was a genuine of a man as you could find.

My thoughts are with the Harwell family, the Detroit Tigers and Tigers fans today with the news of Ernie losing his battle with cancer. He was one of the all-time greats and he is missed already. I love the city of Detroit - I've been there a few times for Red Wings and Tigers games - and I feel for everyone there today.

Being Swedish I have no idea who he was, but he got to be like 95 years old, right? - he got to live a long and interesting life

Rest in peace none the less.

Ernie was a legendary figure in baseball.

When people think of the Tigers...it's Tiger Stadium + Ernie Harwell.

His death hits close to home right now. RIP.

It is a sad day in the State of Michigan. You can still here those informous words "Welcome to the corner of Michigan and Trumble"

Ernie was a staple of every Tiger fans diet. There was something about a Sunny Sunday summer afternoon, relaxing in the back yard with a cold one listening to Earnie making the Tigers sound great.

We will miss, not just the broadcaster but the great man that left us yesterday. Our deepest sympathies go out to the Harwell Family

It would be nice if Ilitch petitioned the City and had the address for Comerica park changed to #1 Harwell Ave

That video made me cry...

My Dad grew up listening to Ernie (he played ball, and may have gone pro if he didn't blow his knee out) and therefore I always knew that Ernie was the Tigers... It's hard to explain how a public figure that I've never met can mean so much... I remember last September when he came out and spoke that my Dad nearly teared up...

Ernie was the best play by play announcer I have ever heard. I've never been a huge baseball fan but my dad was. He was a pretty good pitcher and was offered a minor league contract by the St. Louis Cardinals organization out of high school. I'll always remember listening to Ernie on WJR with him. I haven't lived in Michigan for a long time and a few things can transport me back - Ernie's voice does it every single time.

So now Ernie is gone but he will never forgotten . Godspeed Ernie Harwell.
