Blown out at home by 7-4 FCS powerhouse Youngstown State, but drops 27 on the big bad Rutgers defense.

So far do they move up in the polls now?

The Big East grew by two more members Tuesday, adding Tulane for all sports and East Carolina as a football-only member. The moves will take place for the 2014-15 season, as the Big East continues its overhaul after losing members to the ACC, Big 12 and Big 10.

The latest move that shook the conference, Rutgers' defection to the Big Ten, set the table for this move. In East Carolina, the Big East gets a school with a rabid fan base and a strong history of traveling for bowl games. In Tulane, it gets a school vigorously pouring money into its football and basketball programs as the university attempts to increase its national profile. Tulane's football and basketball programs have been among the worst in Conference USA over the past decade. However, the move appears to be as much an attempt to capture a large market -- the city of New Orleans -- as a solid program.

The Big East is fully embracing its mid-major status.

Pretty much. Say what you want about Rutgers and Maryland, but they're at least a hop, skip, and a jump above Tulane and freaking East Carolina.

Marshall would be smart to try and rejoin the MAC.

Is Maryland trying to skip out on the ACC exit fee? Local news is reporting that the ACC filed suit in Guilford County over it

DaveG, if you're around, I guess someone had a beat on our suggestion of Tulane. Here's a sign that recent success isn't going to play much of a factor going forward.

East Carolina...long ago this is what they were shooting for. They wanted to be the Virginia Tech alternative when they left.

Everyone knew this would end up in court. Maryland was never going to pay 50 million and with rumors swirling around linking around half the current ACC roster with moves to other conferences the ACC figured "if we lower this sum, this conference is toast" and decided to play this out to the bitter end.

I'm so happy WVU got out in time. If only they had a defense...

It's almost like the conferences aren't concerned about women's basketball or something...

Yeah, it's kinda funny, in that athletically UL is a way better fit for the Big Ten than Maryland.

But they're absolute garbage academically, so they were never coming over, plus a lot of TVs in that area probably already have BTN.

We've been over this before, there is no such thing as garbage academics, especially when it comes to post-high school education

With the rumors going around yesterday that the ACC was going to pass on Louisville because of their academics, I'm really disappointed in this news.

I agree with that to a very large extent, but the presidents of Universities have a big hand in these decisions, and I don't think they would agree with this statement at all.

While football wise, Louisville has been better recently, barring the major injuries Maryland had, I think they would be a bit closer. Louisville's schedule wasn't that difficult. Maryland was probably going to be at 6 or 7 wins if not for losing 3 QBs.Most programs wouldn't be able to deal with playing a LB at QB.

As for basketball, Louisville is better, but it isn't a wide gulf over time. Maryland has won a title more recently, and they're on the ascendancy.

Yep. Tulane's one of those programs, that if they could ever land somewhere that gave them an opportunity, could become something decent given their location. Though they're proof that winning isn't everything, the last time they were all that good of a program is a decade ago when I was still an undergrad. And there were rumors about them moving to a bigger conference even way back then.

About time on East Carolina.

I do see a bit of irony in the ACC having to add Louisville when academics is the reason they spurned WVU last year leaving them open to hit the Big 12.

WVU ended up striking gold - better to be in the Big 12 than the ACC.

Middle Tennessee is heading to the WAC...er, I mean C-USA.

When will conference realignment jump the shark?

Oh no question, economically alone, even with being slowly phased in to the full share in the Big 12, they're going to be making a lot more in the Big 12 then they would in the ACC and certainly more then they would had they stayed in the Big East.

Just would love to see the Backyard Brawl get renewed as an OOC game each season ala Georgia-GT, Clemson-SC, etc.

So the ACC is the new Big East. The Big East is the new Conference USA. Conference USA is the new Sun Belt. Sun Belt is the new...SoCon?

Flames Nation ‏@Flames_Nation
If FAU goes from Sunbelt > CUSA, Sunbelt will be down to 8 teams. Will probably then add 4 to get to 12. Liberty will likely be 1 of the 4

Flames Nation ‏@Flames_Nation
Other teams that could be added by Sunbelt - App State, GA Southern, Jax State. JMU would be the wildcard.

Taken with a grain of salt, obviously. IF we were to move up, a conference with GSU, JMU, Charlotte, ODU, and Marshall would be ideal, but it's a pipe dream. IF we move up alone, to the Sun Belt, I will not be thrilled. We need to have at least one school to move up with us and preserve any sort of rivalry.
