Finnish hockey fed boss: WC in 2011 unlikely, NHL warming to OG in 2014
I posted this in the World Cup 2011 thread already but thought it deserved it's own thread. Finnish hockey federation boss Kalervo Kummola did a little Q&A session with Finnish paper Iltalehti yesterday and here the most interesting comments translated:
- About the World Cup in 2011: "World Cup has been heavily favoured and backed by the NHLPA. Since Paul Kelly was fired, absolutely nothing has happened regarding organizing it. Now it looks like there's no way it'll be held in 2011."
- About NHL participation at Sotshi 2014: Kummola talked to Bettman during Vancouver Olympic games and Bettman's stance on it had softened considerably. He was now clearly in favour of NHL participation. "Naturally owners might be against it, but they don't really understand international hockey. But Bettman and his staff do."
Logistically if the NHL has to prepare for a huge tournament like Soichi, going by Bettman's "crucial planning", and the World Cup preparations. If the NHL has to be in the Olympics, I think reasonably that would be the reason to not hold a World Cup. Who knows what these guys in the hockey brass think.
