Halak salary negotiations start here, thanks to Stars

Well it looks like the very bottom of any salary negotiation for Halak next year starts at 3.5 million per. This is quite a healthy raise, but one has to figure in with his playoff success over Lehtonen in Dallas will net him even more.

If your Alan Walsh and your talking money with Pierre Gauthier you know the bar has been set at Lehtonen for a minimum.

The cap space for next year has just got even tighter for those who thought 2 million per.

http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=321267

Lehtonen is 26, limited playoff experience and often injured and gets a 3 year $10.65 million deal???

If your Gauthier you aren't liking this signing.

Halak's new deal may spell the end of Price in Montreal. And maybe Hamrlik or Spacek.

Lehtonen plays 12 games and somehow gets a raise from his $3 million contract...

That's the first thing I thought when I saw the signing.. Terrible for the Habs goaltending situation. If Lehtonen is worth 3.55 god knows how much Halak is worth

If Halak's agent tries to bring that up can't Gauthier just be like "That was a terrible signing and you know it"

Or "Rask will be making $1.25 million for the next two years."

Lehtonen's qualifier was around 3M$.

Halaks qualifier isn't even 1M$ if I'm not mistaken.

Yeah, huge difference.

It sucks that Lehtonen is a RFA because I was hoping we could use Halak's RFA status.

But if we can sign Halak for $3.5, I don't mind that at all.

It's hard to say, he seems like a shy guy who's not into the media frenzy / celebrity life style either.

I wouldn't be surprised if deep down he just wants a long term contract in a smaller market where he can settle down, live a quiet life and start a family in time.

I see it the other way around.

I think this is the end for Halak because there's no way Gauthier pays him 4-5million or whatever crazy amount he wants.

His value is at it's peak. Smartest asset move is to trade him
Buy low, sell high

we bought low (9th round pick) and we sell high (top 6 forward)

top 6 forward? If we move Halak it better be a 1st line player...preferably a 1st line center with us likely losing Plekanec....and no Gomez isnt (Gomez is however a really good 2nd line center IMO)

and what was malkin's qualifying offer?

Halak's not Malkin (then again, who's more valuable right about now ) , or crosby, ovechkin, or any other star player coming up for a new deal while still RFA... but point is that at a certain performance level, the qualifying offer pretty much goes out the window.

people still seem to believe that an offer sheet won't happen because if hasn't happened before (yet?!?) for a goalie, but imo, after watching these playoffs, there are going to be GM's itching at landing a player capable of doing what Halak is doing... especially if it can come in at 4-4.5M and only cost them a 1st and 3rd...

even if they apparently can't afford it, the teams have all summer to become cap compliant, so a Chicago or SJ (if they don't get a cup with Nabokov), could easily decided he's worth the gamble.

Getting halak on the cheap, at this point, is highly unlikely. With Lethonen's deal, I'd bet Halak and his agent will ask for 5M$ and not be willing to settle for a penny less than 4M$.

and given the way Halak has been juggled with price up until game 3 of the playoffs, there's really no reason to expect that they won't play hardball with the team.

4 year $18 million is high, we can't keep Pleks for that either, or re-sign the others.

they can't offer sheet him cuz we can just protect ourselves by initiating arbitration.

Cam Ward got a 3 yr 8mil contract following a conn smythe performance. Chill out, Halak doesn't seem to be the greedy type either.
