If USA wins Finland must go to the relegation round.
If Finland wins USA must go to the relegation round.

Pretty straight forward since Germany beat Denmark in regulation.

With the Germans winning in regulation, it's very simple for both teams.

Win (OT or regulation) and advance.
Lose (OT or regulation) and go to the relegation round.

Not yet relegated, the loser can still avoid relegation against the other last place teams. But I guess that's what you meant.

Because Vehanen earned the start with his play against Germany, according to the Finnish coach. And it's kind of hard to argue with that.

I think it would be like this, I'm not sure about 1st and 2nd though. But Finland would be third.

If Finland wins in OT/Shootout:

1st: Germany
2nd: Denmark
3rd: Finland
4th USA

EDIT: I double checked and I was wrong. Now it should be correct.

Finland wins in OT -> Germany 1st, Denmark 2nd?
Finland would have the 3rd best scoring difference, so they can't be 1st. Germany has 5-3 and Denmark 7-5.
Because Germany won Denmark -> Germany 1st.

Am I right?

Not quite.

Here are the tie breaking rules for 3 or more tied teams:

Step 1:
Taking into consideration the games between each of the tied teams, a sub-group is created applying the points awarded in the direct games amongst the tied teams from which the teams are then ranked accordingly.

Step 2:
Should the teams still remain tied then the better goal difference in the direct games amongst the tied teams will be decisive.

Step 3:
Should the teams still remain tied then the highest number of goals scored by these teams in their direct games will be decisive

So since all would have the same points from the games against each other and Finland would have worst goal differential from the games against each other while Denmark and Germany would still be tied it depends on the most goals scored in the games between the three teams and Denmark scored 5 while Germany only scored 3.

EDIT: Just realised I was wrong. After it's determined that Finland is third, it depends on the game between Germany and Denmark and since we won that Germany would be 1st and Denmark 2nd.

I had overlooked the bolded passage in the rules:

Should three or more teams be tied on points, then a tie breaking formula will be applied as follows, creating a sub-group amongst the tied teams. This process will continue until only two teams remain tied. The game between the two remaining tied teams would then be the determining tie-breaker as the game between these two teams could not end as a tie.

Step 4:
Should three or more teams still remain tied then the results between each of the three teams and the closest best-ranked team outside the sub-group will be applied. In this case the tied team with the best result (1. points, 2. goal difference, 3. more goals scored) against the closest best ranked-team will take precedence

Step 5:
Should the teams still remain tied, then the results between each of the three teams and the next highest best-ranked team outside the sub-group will be applied.

Step 6:
Should the teams still remain tied after these five steps have been exercised then Sport considerations will be applied and the tied teams will be ranked following their 2009 IIHF World Ranking Positions.

It should be noted that the final seeding in the group is pretty much irrelevant, since the next round is also a round robin: the top 3 teams in group D would enter into a group with the top 3 teams from group A, and the only thing the seedings would determine is the order of the games. However, the results against other teams that advance carry through.

Thus, if you're Denmark, you want Finland to win so you get 3 points to carry over instead of 2 (if US wins). If you're Germany, you want USA to win so you get 5 points to carry over instead of 3.

Yes you are right, but as it is already said the seeding after the Preliminary Round is irrelevant what counts are the points the teams take into the Qualification Round. If Finland wins in OT or in regular time doesn't matter, they would in both cases take 3 point into the Qualification Round.

I still can't get over how poor the American roster is. I mean that's just terrible. I haven't even heard of some of those guys.

Hopefully the line changes will help jump start some offense for Team USA.
