a) why was he never drafted? he was supposed to be the only other goalie worth anything in the WHL other than Ward and Harding. ???

b) why do the Sens want him? they have Emery in the wings...??? trade bait???

Guard is pretty good, he could be a very good NHL backup, or maybe even a low grade starter. Nice signing, Ottawa.

Emery will probably be up with the big club, so we needed to fill a spot in Binghampton. I could see Thompson and Guard splitting icetime until one takes over.

He is a minor league goaltender at best

There are plenty of undrafted goalies are goalies who were drafted late back in the day where they would be undrafted today, including Belfour and Joseph.

Hmmm.... not disputing whether or not he is talented, but having already played really well in the WHL, and now getting a contract from Ottawa, doesn't that make him a minor league goaltender at worst? Or, will you go on record saying that he will never play in the NHL?

He'll likely be in the AHL next year, which is considered pro...so minor league at worst it is. I think it was a good signing because for the numbers he's put up you may as well take a cheap risk. He could turn out to be a star goaltender if developed properly or he could simply be a career AHLer. Considering the circumstances with our goaltending in Ottawa it was a good move for the future.

And again, what exactly are you basing that evaluation on? How often have you seen Guard play?

With Kelly Guard, there are two types of fans.

#1 - Those who are impressed by Guard's ability to hold his team in games and think he's got NHL potential.

#2 - Those who think the team makes him, and that he's simply a product of the system.

Sort of like a Martin Brodeur arguement I guess.

Actually, I'm not at all sold on Guard making it to the NHL, but even behind the best defensive team you don't wind up with a 1.56 GAA without having some skills.

I'm just curious as to how somebody in Maryland knows enough about a WHL goalie to determine whether or not he's got NHL potential.

Believe it or not we here in Maryland have TV's, Phones and even the Internet. So not only can we see hockey games but we can even read profiles and updates on every player in the WHL. Were almost as cool as Calgary .

Hey, i was asked to go on record and i did. My guess is as good as any but I can't imagine this guy ever playing in the NHL. There are a lot of guys who do very well in the WHL and don't have NHL careers.

There is a reason why no team wanted to waiste a pick on this guy. And I know that there are players that make the NHL and have become stars in the NHL who went undrafted. But its not like that happens often. I just don't think this guy has enough talent to be an NHL goaltender, even as a backup.

You: Reads some "profiles and updates" on the internet and figures that qualifies you to say, with absolute certainty, that Guard has no chance to make the NHL.

Me: Watches Guard play, in person, 30 or so times in the last two years, sees his game evolve and improve, and still thinks it's a tough call as to whether or not he's got enough room left on his development curve to make it.

Which opinion sounds like it's a little more realistic?

I rate the opinion of any guy who's watched him a few times. So Jasper, how many times have you watched him play?

It all depends on who's watching the Games. The reports i have read are from guys who have watched him play and know what it takes to make the NHL.

Then there is you.

I'll take the opinions of the pro's thank you

And why does it piss you off so much that I don't think this guy is good enough? can I not have an opinion?

Someone challenged me to go on the record saying this guy won't make it. Thats the way I feel about him so I stood up to the challenge and said what i felt.

From what I have seen and read about him, I don't think he will make the NHL. Am I 100% sure, of course not because you never know for sure. But I am going to bet on the odds and on a gut feeling I have and say he isn't going to make it. If you don't like my opinions and what i have to say then don't read my posts.
