Staal, 19, recorded 12-37-49 and 57 penalty minutes (PIM) in 59 games for Sudbury of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) this season. The forward was originally drafted by the Coyotes in the second round (49th overall) of the 2008 Entry Draft.

Would be nice to know why this was done.
Because he hasn't shown any progression in the last three years. A 19 year old in the OHL who put up the numbers he did in his first two years should have taken a huge step this year, instead he did nothing.
Plus, he had to be signed soon or he would have re-entered the draft, obviously Maloney didn't think he was worth a 3-year commitment. Might as well get something for him.
Probably because you don't have three brothers who play in the NHL, which is the only reason Jared got drafted.
LOL and the only reason he still has trade value. Not happy about using the second with him, but very happy we were able to relay him for anything of value. Maloney the asset management king does it again.
Watching Staal play kind of makes me wish I stuck with Hockey. If a guy like that can get drafted, why couldn't I have done it.
Glad we were able to get something for this guy, but wasn't he supposed to be a 4-5 year project anyways?
Because you played unselfish hockey and chose to pass before shooting, even though you could score from about any angle on the ice, is my guess.
I never really understood why we drafted him besides the name on the back of the jersey. From my really basic understanding, he was nothing really special to begin with, and I guess my thoughts are verified after reading the posts above. Best of luck to him!
Wasnt a huge fan of the draft pick originally. But it is what it is. Hopeully Chris Brown or Tikhonov can become that big power forward that the Yotes wanted Staal to be.

I'm banking on Chris Brown on becoming a Malone-esque player for the Coyotes... He has the tools.
