Bulis is overated imo, what do you think..............???

Some people here treat this guy as if he is the king of defensive specialist on the third line if not one of the league ilite. Well, imo he is not. Is he bad defensively, heck no, but he is also not good enough to be considered a league ilite defensive player. Bulis spent most of this season on the top two lines, and thats probably why he finished with a minus 8 on the season. However, in the playoffs, he was a minus 6, on the checking line. So is the playoff plus/minus number more important in determining just how good defensively Bulis is, because he played on a defensive unit?? I dont think so, because last season he was a plus 14 on the top 6 unit as a regular. So what do all these numbers mean. IMO, nothing, i dont think you can look at numbers too see just how good or bad someone is. Now taking a look at him visually, instead of numbers, he looks slightly above average in terms of defensive play. Bulis still srtugles at times in our own zone. Can he improve, sure he can, but i dont agree when people say he is/will be an ilite defensive specialist. Im not saying Bulis is a bad defensive player, i just dont think he is as good as people say he is sometimes, especially hab fans. I do however think he will be a part of our future on the third unit. Hes still relatively young, and should improve with experience. Id say hes another Dowd type player in the mold. Right now, hes Quick, not too physical, and has decent scoring touch, just like Dowd; but just lacks experience.

So do you think he is overated (by our fans)??

Which fans? People barely talk about him and even though he might not be in the leagues eloite, he's still our best defensive forward and he'll never cost you a goal while still being a threat offensively. He's still relatively young and much more skilled then Dowd. Also, dont forget he's our best skater by far, he's a natural and all he has to do is work on his finishing skills to be a 20 goal scorer. I dont see how someone who never gets beat, who makes plays in all three zones, whos intense and who can play in any game situation can be overrated. If the guy isnt that good defensively, what are Dackell, Juneau, Sundstrom, Begin and Ward?

yes

I think the fans here tend to overrate him. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but let's put it this way; do I think we'd be able to trade him for a 2nd round pick this year? That's a tough call.

I like Bulis, and your assessment of him is basically mine. I think as he gains experience he will become a valuable member of our 3rd line. He'll continue to learn the little tricks that will get him more garbage goals, and allow him to shut down top-line wingers.

He does have to be more physical, but I think he'll grow into that by playing a little different role next year, with different expectations.

One thing I like about him is that he seems, at least to me, to have pretty decent hockey sense. He's got enough skill that once he learns the tricks of the trade he'll be one of those valuable veteran role players that all Cup contenders need.

Far more valuable to the organization than anything he could bring in trade, imo.

No! I think he's actually underrated. His offensive abilities and his overall game are very underrated imo. I even think that he can score a lot more than he's doing right now. His confidance is very low offensively and it hurts his scoring touch. But he has a lot of chances that no one else on the team get. He also has a very good chemestry with Saku. He's fast, he has a hard shot and he has above average hands. Add to that that he's very good defensively. I never look at +/-, it means absolutly nothing. Anyways, he's a good pk'er and a very effective checker on even strenght. He's if an elite player in that aspect? Not all the time. Sometimes he is. But, who else would you rather have on your third line?

Bulis is a decent 3rd liner and that's about it.

With his speed, he can fill gaps on the first two lines due to injuries. But next year though, I would rather have a 1st line prospect play on the first line in MTL (higgins, perez, kasty, hossa) then have Bulis move up. He had his chances not let the younger ones show what they can do.

I like Bulis, he's got size and speed. But he won't pan out to be more than a good 3rd liner having 30-35 points seasons. Not that there is anything wrong with that...

Madden, Premeau, McCauley, Draper are ilite imo. I dont think Bulis is in the same class.

Bulis might be fast, but that's pretty much it. He's not physical, too often looses fights in the corners (la rampe), is not creative, and sometimes costs turnovers. But, what annoys me the most about Bulis is that he doesn't see anything when he plays, he seems to play with binders (des ornières en français, I'm not sure of binders is the right word though, but what I mean is that he does not have a vision of the ice, of what is going on). Moreover, he can't pass and doesn't have a strong shot. I don't think he'll ever be a 20 goal scorers and I'd trade him for a defencmen, one of our biggest need, because Bulis still has value because he appears to be a good player in the making, even if he's not.

No one on these boards have put him in the same class. I heard once from Guy! that he could become a Jere Lehtinen type in a few years(although I HIGHLY doubt he'll become the games best two way player) but even then no one has ever put him in the elite class. He's in the upper tiers, but not the top 5%.

I agree that he's a 3rd liner, but I'd like to have 3rd liners that not only play a good defencive game, but that also play a physical game, and Bulis doesn't play physical.

Well, realisticly, you can't have them all. Bulis on any team's third line would be a great asset.

I think he can become an elite defensive player yes. But you need to assign him that role...

Bulis-Higgins-Ward

That would be my 3rd line next year..

they may have to if perezhogin isn't up with the big club. i don't know why they don't try him @ 3rd line center though, unless they've got that spot marked for plekanec.

Whatever the Habs do, do not put him on the first or second line. Offensively, he reminds me of Petrov, skates likes like heck, drives to the net, but vary rarely somthing ever comes out of his effort. He doesn't see the ice either, so no passes here.....

Defensively...how good are you when your role is to shut down the opposition and you have a negative plus minus. For those who say that stat is not valid, they are as valid as assists. We all count those....

He is a roster spot, but not a player that should ever block a promising prospect from getting ice time.

If I chose between him and Ward.....Ward all the way.

I don't know if I've ever heard anybody consider him "elite" defensively. I definitely think that Jan is a third liner though. He can skate and he has decent size and although he doesn't always use his body, he is a pretty good forechecker on some nights. He's got some decent tools to work with in his skating and his abilities though. I definitely think he's not filler, but he belongs on the third line for sure.

I used to think he had the ability to play on the top line, but now I think he's a third liner at best.

I think he's a great 3rd liner, decent fill in 2nd liner, and a bad option on the 1st line...all in all, he's a solid player and one the Habs can build with, he's got a good offensive game, but sometimes it seems like he's just recently learned to play hockey, especially in the offensive zone, but anyone saying that Bulis is just a filler, is IMO, wrong...

He's a good defensive forward, but he still makes mistakes, you have to understand that when he came out of the OHL he was thought of as a purely offensive player, for him to show this much poise in the defesive zone is quite an accomplishement
