General Manager's Model

No contraction talk or anything, just a completely hypothetical situation here.

The NHL is expanding to include two more teams. You have been named GM of one of these teams and it is your job to draft the players needed for the team. Obviously an expansion draft isn't going to give you the greatest talent, so to get the most out of the draft you create a model. You then draft players based on this outline trying to create a basis for chemistry and performance.

To give you an idea, and to get this thing started here's mine:

Forwards

First Line: Sniper-All Around Player-Playmaker
Second Line: Power Forward-Playmaker-Power Forward
Third Line: Energy Winger-Checking Centre-Defensive Winger
Fourth Line: Energy Winger-Roleplayer-Enforcer

Defence

Pairing 1: All Around Player-Offensive Specialist
Pairing 2: Shut Down-Stay at Home
Pairing 3: Stay at Home-Offensive

And obviously you choose the best goaltender possible.

Anyone see the trend ?

Dude! after having read your post, I had to re-read the original post just to make sure I hadn`t lost my mind.

The guy was talking about an expansion team. Since when are these players available in an expansion-dispersal draft? the players available would be 10th fwds and 5th defencemen of each team, not team canada candidates!

If I were GM, I would have a totally different strategy that you will disaproove of and that all fans of my team would hate. I would intentionaly draft a terrible team in an effort of finishing last overall the 1st 3 or 4 years of our existence. Therefore assembling a great nucleus. If an expansion team is gonna miss the playoffs their 1st 5 years and suck... I say suck all the way! Again, everyone would disagree and it`s highly unethical but it`s the best way of putting together a championship material nucleus right away. See what Ottawa and Atlanta put together.

I'm kinda lost as to what's going on in this thread :p

I'd probably do what most of the expansion teams have done - go for a strong forecheck. Not because a good forecheck is easy to do, just that it's easy to set up with young players. Plus, it makes for exciting hockey, exciting hockey makes for fans, fans makes for revenue, revenue makes for better opportunities for signing players.
