Big deal. Talk to me when we have a pro hockey player who eats McDonalds everyday ala Ochocinco.

There was a post about NHL players and smoking that brought this, and semin smoking, up.

In my humble opinion, I think guys who make a living off of being professional hockey players, who basically need to be conditioned and fit generally to be successful, should respect their bodies more than to smoke.

They have every right to do it though. It's unfortunate if they do, but it's their choice.

I find it weird that NHL players smoke. You always see this athletes who are in tip-top physical health, and have great bodies and you forget about the deficiencies in their lifestyles such as smoking.

I don't even see why does this need its own thread... Is smoking really that big of a deal or a tabu? I think its everyones own bussiness what they do or don't do, everybody has their own sins and skeletons in the closet.

Isn't that the future of goaltending in Dallas?

Actually the average lifespan of Russian men was 63 in 2009. In 1998 it was 58 so there has been an improvement lately. But yes it is true that they drink and smoke too much. Unfortunately hockey players seem to be no exceptions.

Playing Health Police on an internet message board is just freakin' sad.
And playing oppinion police isnt?

If Russian hockey players want to die early I don't really care.

I don't mean to be singling them out, I feel the same about anybody. Smoking is legal, and it is what it is. I don't want it blown in my face, or in my car, or around me in general, but what can you do?

I find it disgusting, and have only done it a handful of times in my life, but clearly some people can't get enough.

Does anyone else realize that smoking is being phased out, or gradually being made illegal (in North America)?

First you can't do it on a plane, then you can't do it in schools or hospitals, then not in restaurants, then you can't do it near any building or in any building.

I wouldn't be surprised if they make it completely illegal within my lifetime. Seriously people, if you smoke heavily it will catch up to you. And if you enjoy one smoke every once in a while, why not trade it for a drink? One drink is actually good for you, and IMO is much more enjoyable.

EDIT: On topic, I thought NHL players had a stipulation in their contract prohibiting smoking. Could be wrong...

Pfff, it's their life and their health. For professional athletes it is pretty dumb but that is their choice. I don't have any respect for anyone who smokes or does drugs let alone athletes who do it.

In general, when you kill yourself, you hurt everyone else. That is just a basic reality of how our world and economy currently work. So why shouldn't everyone else be concerned with your well being?

It is in suburban North America

if they're getting paid millions to do what they're doing it's obviously not hurting them.

How disappointing. I was expecting them to get caught trashing a hotel room with a bunch of hookers.

According to the American Cancer Society, tobacco was involved in around 440,000 deaths in the US back in 2001 (the last year that they listed data for) and according to the CDC in 2006 were 2,426,264. Assuming that the 440,000 statistic stayed roughly the same in 2006, that accounts for 18.1% of the deaths in the US. Almost a fifth.

But you're right. It rarely kills.

http://www.cancer.org/docroot/PED/co...and_Cancer.asp

http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/fastats/deaths.htm

By the way, I really don't care if the players smoke. They know the risk, unless they're really stupid, and it's none of my concern.
