Who cares if I enjoy smoking something once in a while? I guarantee the amount of running and weights I do benefit me enough to counteract the suicide I'm committing via 5 cigarettes/joints per month. Not to mention my diet (I'm studying nutrition)... I bet most of these athletes feel the same way.
Yeah bro, lifting weights is totally going to help when you get lung cancer down the road.

who cares? I highly doubt for someone like Semin and their athleticism that smoking really does a whole lot, if smoking makes you a worse player i feel pretty bad for all the people who dont smoke and cant get anywhere close to the level of Semin.

It's kind of funny, I came in here expecting North American fans to be criticizing the Russians for smoking and the Russian fans defending it, but it's the opposite.

Never smoked, drink very lightly only a few times a year, Semin is probably about a million times better than me. I have really horrible reflexes, possibly due to severe jaundice I had after birth, possibly due to never playing many sports until I was older, possibly due to bad eyesight.

Depends how much he's smoking.

If Semin has a smoking habit, yes, it probably affects his on-ice performance to some degree or another.
If he's smoking 1 or 2 at a pub or restaurant every once and a while.......big deal.

I was playing with a dude who played major junior. Guy lit up after lighting me up. Humbling. The fact that he was in better shape then me was accented by his victory cig.

Playing Health Police on an internet message board is just freakin' sad.
I feel that a pro athlete's vices, if they can at all negatively effect their performance, are somewhat relevant for us as fans to know.

There's a certain level of trust that goes into the fan-team relationship. When we pay money to see a team, we expect that the team in question is, at least in theory, going to give us their best effort. If one of those team members is knowingly doing something that can negatively effect himself and his team, I'd say it's worth bringing up.

It's not our place to judge someone who smokes, but it is our place to judge the team that's apparently okay with having players who aren't fully committed to playing at their potential.

As for Lemieux's performance, it only really took off once once Gretzky convinced him to cut back.

We can say that Lafleur or Zubov smoked constantly, and performed at a very high level but we'll never know if they could have been even better if they didn't smoke.

You can say that with just about anything that involves risk. Can't snowboard, can't skydive, can't ride motorcycles, can't drink alcohol, can't cross the street, can't do anything that might kill you. Gotta live the most boring life ever so that your boring life never ends.

I think they'll manage just fine guys. I don't care if the guy smokes.

Now if Semin shows up to camp next year wheezing after shifts then maybe you can question his habits. I pack lips when someone has a tin, so I'm not gonna judge.

first off, who cares if they smoke? can they eat chocolate cake? drink booze? there's a limit to expectations lol. smoking isn't the idea decision an athlete could make, but i've heard of worse lol.

as long as they perform, who gives a ****. really.

personally, i think it's a rare thing that they do when they play together... kinda like guys with cigars, just belarussian

The players are boycotting the Russian media until the end of the tournament because that video was shown on national television while the game itself was not even broadcast live. It's mandatory for at least three players to face the media and the youngsters Kulikov and Anisimov did the duties after the Denmark match. It looked like the video was a closed case after the coaches joked about it and said that they talked to the players about it, but the press will obviously exploit any potential scandal possible. It's an annual tradition with Russia.

I honestly think it would shock some people to learn what current NHL "Stars" are doing on their free time.

I have heard stuff, of course purely circumstantial, but I don't really doubt it. Basically because I hear stuff from more than one source with no ties to each other, and I trust them.

If guys are smoking, they are idiots, but they are pretty low on the idiot scale compared to the rumours of what some other guys are doing.
